It's like Lain and Digimon got drunk one night and had an illegitimate child. Had this cool mix vibe of browsing pre-00s internet and hanging out with your friends in summer at your grandparent's village. Rumors, superstitions, conspiracies, urban legends, that actually turn out to be real and affect people irl. Also, this anime had the only episode ever that I can genuinely call scary and creepy. You'll know which one. No horror anime even comes close to this. It was like I was seeing one of my nightmares in an anime episode.

Every person who said "Oh you're a computer guy? You must like Serial Experiments Lain" I told them to watch Dennou Coil instead.

Lain was so much surface and magic decorated with wires and ow-the-edge and its obvious the author didn't have a plan. DC is hacking and 30-minutes-in-the-future and the author knew what they were doing.

DC didn't have to spend an entire fucking episode doing expository narration.
