Is Negima the first manga to actually use known RL ancient language in magic incantations? Can't think of any other manga that applies Roman, Ancient Greek, or even Sanskrit in their magic.

It's cool, but the only issue with writing it out like this is I don't know what the hell to read so I would just kind of mumble some vaguely Greek sounding nonsense in my head

But it is kind of educational, especially the Lexicon Magicum Negimarium, which elaborates on the origin and not just the translation.

No

I can't think of another example but probably not.
Also, do buddhist incantations count as ancient language? That's somewhat common.

I like to think we subconsciously determined that Latin was a magic language not because of all its relation to Medieval prestige or because it was the language of demonological literature next to Hebrew, but rather due the equation: >ancientness=sacredness
In many cultures, elders should be respected, and we expect them to carry knowledge about how the world works. We can apply this to objects and other entities, and thence we assume by how old it is, some importance is involved.

Seed-syllable? Those are common, but it is hard to remember the series other than Negima. Kekkaishi? Amaenaide yo?

The funny thing is that in the OP, the name of the magic spell is Κιλιπλ Άστραπή (Kilipl Astrape), when it should be Χιλιαπλῆ Ἀστραπή (Chiliaple Astrape), which is "Thousand-fold Lightning" for the correct translation of the magic spell name.

Or Χίλιες Αστραπές (Chílies Astrapés) for the literal translation from japanese, Sen no Ikazuchi [千の雷].

UQ Holder is the sequel, Negima is the original.

I've seen a few others but Negima was definitely my first exposure to it. Funny thing is I happen to know a bit of Greek and Latin 20 years later so now I'm wondering why he suddenly switched between them for one spell and why it sounds to me he was setting up an on the fly lightning bomb instead of a wide AOE. It also never occurred to me how odd all caps greek looks.

Now that I think about it I feel like I've seen Cuneiform used in design motifs more often than I've seen latin get used in dialogue for manga.

Hokuto no Ken did it for some Hokuto Ryuken stuff, though I'm not sure it was ever translated.

There were entire manga dedicated to Rgveda that were Japan only
Saint Seiya is an easy example for Ancient Greek

This reminded me of Tower Dungeon and Lilisen's spell, but in truth it's just the translator hamming it up.
The original is just a bunch of regular Japanese fire related words, some more obscure than others.

They show up quite a lot in magic circles, but incantations? That's a different field of expertise.

It's supposed to be Tibetan script. The official English translation under Viz Media didn't translate the Tibetan script either.
