The final movie gave Karen some depth but at the cost of a whole season where she's actively a flat and boring character. Without the movie fixing all the issues from the anime (Karen being flat, none of the main "parings" having big Revues against each other, etc.), I wouldn't even be able to recommend the series to others in earnest even with the Nana twist/subplot.

>>285225656I'm pretty surprised an anime sequel is being made, they really perfectly nailed the film closing out the series and its themes as much as could be considered feasible for an anime production, especially with the themes of the rondo and the next station. I'm honestly worried that a followup will basically cheapen the artistic achievement pulled off by the film, I think I'll watch it anyway though since the anime parts are far and away the best parts of the franchise IMO. Even the stageplays ironically are held back by the live physical nature of their performance while the anime is free to get as surreal as it wants to illustrate the blurry lack of separation for the butai shoujo between on and off stage. The new anime should at least manage to easily surpass the mobage stories which at the best of times were anemic lesser retreads of the core Revue Starlight themes

My biggest hope for this anime project is that it has a more reasonable cast size. The 9 girl setup was too much for all of them to get reasonable development. Hell, Bushiroad even struggles to find balance with just 5 girls. Never really got why Mahiru was part of the group who couldn’t move forward in the movie when her performance was mainly about helping Hikari. By the end of it she came off as the most mature because she was still jealous of Hikari but knew not to make it personal.
