If someone has never watched Digimon and wants to get into it, what should they watch first, in what order, and why?

The original Adventure, Tamers, and Savers are probably the most newbie friendly. After that, just make sure to watch the sequels in production order or watch the standalone seasons whenever. Digimon Adventure sequels aren't all that great though.Alternatively, if you want to start with a manga for some reason, V-Tamer's a great option.Beatbreak seems like a pretty good starting place too so far, but it could easily screw up with more than 30 episodes left to go. It's definitely best to start with a competed season at least.

As a very long Digimon fan (well there was a long break after Savers and I rewatched Xros Wars and Appmon later after they are done in tv) I can give you an overview but without these stupid nostalgic goggles on, especially considering you just start with the Digimon anime frranchise.>AdventureIt functions as a good starting point because you learn the basic knowledge of the series pretty easy here. Dont expect more like a big overarching plot here. Its rather four episodic plots/arcs which are vaguely connected to each other and are standalone ok only with the third arc one being better than the rest. The general reception is that this is one of the best series but I can't confirm that. The plot is basic and the characters are mostly flat because the series tries to cover 8 main characters in 54 episodes which is just way to much. If you have seen high quality anime outside of the franchise and have a feeling of good strory telling you'll notice plot holes and bad writting. its not bad but unlike what people will tell you this isnt really a good written series. >02Follows the events of the first series since this is a direct seequel so if you are a completionist then watch this next with a fresh memory about the first series since it brings up some stuff from Adventure. This series is mostly experimenting with new stuff. The plot is ok, the first half of the series has a very good antagonist and one fo the best male characters of the franchise. The second half though is bad with the exception of episodes focusing on said character. The other mc are once again bland. So if you would like another series in the same universe as the first series with new main characters, give this a go.

The strenght of this series is the character work so watch some episodes to see if you like them (a problem though is that the it takes a while to properly introduce them).If you like them, then you can decide to watch the rest.

Tamer might be the easiest to recommend. The premise of Digimon coming to life from a popular video game and solving problems in everyday Japan is very relatable. Personally I like the smaller cast size more than Adventure.
