I never got to experience cons in the 2000s. Like I was a fan of anime, but my family was dirt poor at the time and I couldn't afford it. Did I miss out? In general, I was just an internet anime fan posting on forums. I do remember GAR though.
00s were very grassroots but also extremely cringe. A lot of people without any kind of self awareness. Early-mid 2010s was the sweet spot of still being organized and attended by people that actually liked anime while not being completely corporatized yet.
