Planetes is pretty damn solid.
The main liberties taken are the tandem mirror drive (still actually theoretically possible maybe) and letting niggers into space whatsoever.

Cowboy Bebop is genuinely up there. Sure it has FTL travel but it's very limited, and the show never leaves the solar system. None of the tech is particularly outlandish.

The idol wank shit in Macross never appealed to me.

It's like the original anime had this cool idea of having a girl sing during a horrific war to emotionally shock the military brainwashed space giants and then every other series kept repeating that same exact thing over and over again.

Its funny that in the original series the Zentradi get bored of the singing and other human culture because they recognize idol leisure is corrosive.
