Initial D and MF Ghost are cool and all, but the older I get and the more I get into motorsports, the more I realize that the racing in the shows is quite shallow. Small mistakes and corrections don't happen as frequently as they should be and mistakes happen quite unnaturally and only when the plot requires it. There are very few real life tactics involved in taking different racing lines, like late apexes and cutbacks for overtaking on the straights or early apexes and divebombs for overtakes on corner insides. Or feints to force the opponent into making a mistake or altering his line. Or deliberately coming up behind the opponent before the final straight to overtake him on the straight. Tire management seems to be irrelevant because the protagonist's tires never degrade.

The more plausible explanation is that most of these drifts in Initial D and MF Ghost are just artistic liberty and an exaggeration from the animators. In most of the dialogues and battles, it's contradictory and doesn't make sense for them to drift since you're effectively killing the rear tires. It makes more sense that they're all running grip unless explicitly stated otherwise e.g. the kansei drift scene, Takumi(? I forgot)'s opponent being surprised that he suddenly switched to drifting. So it definitely makes more sense to understeer while running grip, since the front tires are under more load from braking and turning (the rears are mostly only responsible for acceleration).

People mistake it for "oversteering" because they're turning harder than they need to. ACTUAL oversteering would result in the driver grinding the front bumper into the inner wall.

On tarmac, you're better off running on the edge of grip aka abusing slip angles, like most professional drivers do. Even most rally drivers run grip on tarmac except on hairpins. It's yet another manga magic that holds little value in real world applications.

Breaking grip means you are sacrificing tire surface in order to go beyond what tire grip allows, in order to corner faster.
