Episodic pointless adventures are fine but they won't engage the audience if they aren't used to introduce and/or develop a main cast. Like for example dragon ball also starts on mostly episodic plotless adventures but by chapter 11 we already have bulma, roshi, yamcha, chichi, and other important characters introduced. Here we've mostly only focused on Gonron and Ohma.
