Sure, Crest can be transferred to only one, but there's no such limitations about magecraft traditions themselves. Why not create a side branch that starts their own Crest from Generation One? Why not teach crestless as a "backup"? You can even mix-and-match, teach non-critical stuff to all other children, and one most important secret technique to the successor. This even will make families stronger as a unit against other rival families.Because of such culture, basically all family magecraft traditions are constantly on the brink of extinction, one death away from being lost forever.
