>>285493157Now THAT I can tell is fucking great.Man I love ninjas. Ninjitsu is so fun. Never got to play them much, though. Was their interaction with first strike ever capitalized on, or is it still just obscure, kinda useless trivia?
>>285493225>Was their interaction with first strike ever capitalized on, or is it still just obscure, kinda useless trivia? Not really. Ninjutsu and first strike tend to appear in different colors, ideally you're returning cheap evasive creatures with ETB triggers rather than something that deals a lot of damage with the first strike, and ninjutsu based decks usually win through some combination of value and tempo, not straight face damage, so the interaction is an awkward fit into the overall strategy.
>>285493225there's a ninja with first strike in the upcoming teenage mutant ninja turtles set, but otherwise you'd have to just run first strikers to ninja out. assuming you're thinking of a more casual format like kitchen table or EDH- you can run ninjas in a grixis or esper deck that cares about 'things similar to ninjutsu but not only ninjutsu' and run red or white first strikers there. there were recent commanders made for just that sort of thing.
>>285493406The latter, then. A shame.>>285493773>but otherwise you'd have to just run first strikers to ninja outOr stuff that gives first strike. The issue is that not only is first strike completely off-color for black/blue ninjas, it's also anti-synergy with evasion. Is there a single creature in the game that naturally has both first strike and unblockable? And is cheap enough to not mind playing repeatedly? I don't think there is. Which means to use this you'd have to give your ninja enablers first strike. But enablers bounce constantly, so enchantments are straight out even if they were in black/blue, so it's got to be equipment. And THEN that means you're paying that equip cost constantly, which isn't worth it at all for just a little bit more damage, which means you'll need evasive creatures that also do shit when they hit your opponent, but wait they still need to be cheap, and even then it still so expensive, and this goes on and on and on until you go "fuck it" and play fairy ninjas like a normal person. When I asked if they ever capitalized on this I meant did they add any cards specifically for this, because they'd fucking have to for it to work. The only bit of practical potential I ever found was pic related on the ninjas themselves. And it's still not very good.

I just wanna say that I hate how Grixis has become Izzet with black access, thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Speaking of ninja enablers, I think that very concept outs ninjutsu as something of a failed mechanic. The intent behind ninjutsu is to play mind games with your opponent. Swing with some shitty creature, doesn’t block, poof, it’s a ninja! Now he’s uncertain about every creature swinging at him. Should he block or not…?The problem is that it really doesn’t work like that. If your opponent can block than he usually will, there’s not really much uncertainty there, and you don’t want to give your opponent choices if you can help it anyway. So instead ninjutsu has ended up being just a way to get pretty good creatures out for cheap via also-cheap evasive creatures, skipping the intended mind games entirely. Which is a shame, because that’s the fun part.Maybe if there was a counterpart to ninjutsu which worked on blocked creatures instead? Ninja Strike or something. And those ninjas do stuff when they hit creatures instead of players, they’ve got deathtouch and stuff like that. I dunno. It’d still probably be worse than ninja/fairies, but it might be fun.
>>285488065based and truthpilled. The UB focus has set the fatigue in deep. Not even the return to Lorwyn had me excited and finding out the prerelease was an excuse to throw TMNT cards at everyone was the final nail in the coffin. The Fortnite style enslopification of all IPs has only made everything more boring.
>>285515101Probably is due about colors, maybe if it was BG, with the cheap low treat creatures being with deathtouch instead, or evasie stuff like flyers, the mind games becomes "Do I block the weak creature and lose my creature or risk it for a ninja"
>>285515388Evasive stuff like fliers is already the plan, and IIRC black has plenty of cheap deathtouch cards already. And even then, it’s still worse than evasive ETB enablers. There’s a reason fairies and ninjas are buddies.
Even beyond UB, constant power creep, and designs hyperfocused on EDH, I just wish we had a chance to see the actual planes rather than everything being a flurry of legendary creatures and planeswalkers for a single set then immediately moving on.
>>285516595Well that’s fucking lame. Nevermind.
>>285516300The increase speed release is really bad, I cant believe bloomburrow already feels like an "old set" with one of its chase cards already being reprinted on the precons.
>>285516595The lore has been really hit a miss, I wish they would go to individual plane stories instead of trying to wave everything to a bigger arc, the Bloomburrow story was quite self contained and I actually enjoy it.
>>285516637It didn't keep her down for long considering she attended her own funeral to continue running the Orzhov after the investigation of her murder and the sort of arrest of the mastermind. And the story did a far better job showing the impact of the Phyrexian invasion than March of the Machines did.
>>285516893March of the machine story should have been 2 sets, the march of the machine should have been the invansions and how the planes reacted, ending with the planeswalker and maybe some of the allies that could fight back preparing for the counterattack and then another set that shows the state of the invansion (theros losing the 5 monocolored gods, innistrad necromancy laughing at the infection and probably even launching a counter zombie invasion) and the actual raid on Elesh norn from both the mirrian resistance and whatever planes that could fight back
>>285516893Oh, right. Ghostdad. Or Ghostmom now, I guess. That’s kinda fun. You’ll forgive me for disliking characters from the era of Magic I liked getting killed in the era of Magic I dislike, though. >the Phyrexian invasionUgh.
>>285516704Yeah, my buddy was complaining (rightfully) about going back to Strixhaven but that was 5 years ago. Ravnica and Return to Ravnica were 7 years apart, but that was back when each block took up a whole year on one plane.
>>285494243If you actually believe that you are retarded
>>285516820Kellan was the only actual throughline for the initial Omenpath arc, the stories were overall pretty disconnected and doing fine until Thunder Junction (which sucked except for its epilogue). Bloomburrow and Duskmourn weren't really heavily connected to their overarching stories either, and were both worlds that I wish we spent more time on.Really, the first thing that colors my impressions of a set's story is the Planeswalker's guide. Duskmourn and Edge of Eternities were helped so much by their planeswalker's guides, and it still sucks that a lot of the factions in Duskmourn never made it to the cards. Luckily Edge of Eternities learned from that.
I never particularly cared about the flavor in Magic, I got into it around when Champions of Kamigawa was new so I have always been used to the flavor being "a thing that is currently popular IRL with no relation to anything else in the game". What with the new Standard format being super confusing and arbitrary, I think the Universes Beyond sets just make it a bit easier to have an intuitive feel of what's legal at any given time since they stand out more than the typical Universes Within set.
>>285516300Agreed. Peak Magic was when it was self-contained planes and stories, a whole different setting and cast with every set, with a just a little bit of spice from the overall story.I forget, did Ravnica have any of that spice? And refresh my memory, was Lorwyn’s connection that the big bad’s master plan was something to prepare for The Mending? Or in reaction to it? It’s been awhile.
>>285517708I started in Shards block so my knowledge of that era is fuzzy. Near as I recall original Ravnica was pretty self-contained and mostly concerned with the machinations of the guilds, and Lorwyn was mostly about the magic day/night cycle fucking everyone up
>>285517437I am actually surprised how good Duskmourn flavor and lore made me actually like the place, the whole premise of "the whole plane is actually one big house" was really weird and honestly not that appealing, sounded really gimmicky, but learning how everything is basically a demon apocalypse, how everything that could go wrong, went wrong, how people are still alive on this everything wants to kill you world is by design, their safe havens? Because Valgavoth needs cattle to scare, is not because some angel gave their life and holyness to create a small holy ground that Valgavoth could not influence, and remember that technically, Valgavoth is still trapped on the house, he never left his prision, just found a way to make it bigger and get other people inside it, really fucked up plane.
>>285517708Lowryn original story was how the night-day cycle was coming faster than usual, a side effect of the mending, so Oona, the fairy queen started rushing things to secure her and her kingdom safety, while the local heroes were responding to this and some of the people that remember stuff from each cycle noticing what was going on and that Oona was becoming vulnerable, a change to finally kill her and break her chockehold in the plane.
>>285513459>$1400 at minimumImagine how much the card would cost if it was multi-format playable
>>285515101Good players will usually avoid blocking.
>>285514431Dark Ritual made a lot of black decks incredibly powerful
>>285489671Oh WotC are that far gone. It's a proper gatcha now, chasing characters + skin variants. They're following the money, remember they are trail blazers in the expensive gambling cardboard market.
>>2855234467 standard sets released each year and 3 year rotation. Shits FUCKED
>>285523302It still makes black decks powerful on any format that is playable, something I find funny about people that give decl building to recommendations, is that some say stuff like "black can ramp using ritual "like" cards". But there is no ritual "like" cards, like if you say rampamt growth like card, there is only dark ritual because is that strong, they havent made other cards that come close.
>>285524637Yeah, the only things remotely close to it are Cabal Ritual, Rite of flame and LED. Even then those are powerful within context unlike Dark Rit which doesn't really need context it just is
>>285524774Cabal rites needs a filled graveyard, limiting its tempo, even on a self mill deck, you wont be playing it that early, unlike dark ritual.
>>285523446>Made MTG the fornite of TGC>Gayfied D&D>All their changes on ToS in their properties reeks of shit>They want to go digital to be able to charge subscriptions>All because hasbro shareholdersIs amazing they are still the only division making a profit, but they are burning goodwill fast, people will start dropping fast, and UBfags arent probably long term pkayerd once they realize they are not getting more sets of the IP they like.
>>285524637>some say stuff like "black can ramp using ritual "like" cards". But there is no ritual "like" cardsReminds me of that time someone said imprison in the moon type of effects are pretty common. There was also an argument for specific colours, but even without that, Oubliette is the only card nearly as strong. Everythiing else pales in comparison.
>>285525025A little sad how the card went from rare to common when you consider its color, on the other hand, is really cheap now!
