What have you been working on?
>>
So, after trying a few (relatively) free AI-redraws, I can say that the only workable solution I found is to use nanobanana pro, with 1:1 ratio, and cropping images to 1024x1024, even if it mean cropping and leaving small panel in the middle and then expand to 1024 in all directions.
Usually banana-pro doesn't distort image under such conditions, though results still can vary wildly even with literally the same prompt and image. Overall it's better than lama in 9,5 out of 10 cases, but has some moments of retardation. Not to mention that it can redraw the whole image to something different, and randomly add speech balloons or panels instead of redrawing.
Non-pro banana in addition to random redraws/balloons also can be visibly worse and will randomly distort images even with everything above done. Maybe there's some prompts or ways to prevent that, but you'll need to spend a lot of time and tries/money to research it. Doesn't worth it at all.

I finished my personal uploader script, now whenever I edit my PSD files I can press a button and have the changes sync to Cubari(image chest backend) and Mangadex. I also discovered how much time LLM IDEs save, asking it to interface Fontforge and generate alternative font weights and italicized fonts was a breeze.
>>
>>285500123
We got a couple of redrawers to join this week. Which let us pick up another new series. Not my type so I won't be working on it.
I do wish we get a translator soon. There is a dropped series I want to work on and I'm sure the other guys won't mind.
>>285500757
Nanabanana is a last resort for me. It's the solution to very hard pages, even resolution differences aren't that big of a deal. But the subtle changes puts me off. I also have to notify the rest of the team about it.
>>
>>285500757
Don't you get like 50 or so genrations per day with the pro plan? Why would experimenting cost extra money? It’s anywhere between 2~20 dollars a month depending on discounts/plan sharing.

>>285501346

Can’t you just mask them?
>>
>>285501358
No, I use one of those scam-like sites, where I can use pro for free, but limited. I wouldn't want to pay money for this anyway, but results are acceptable if I don't have to pay for it.
>>
I hate gimp so much. Inkscape also seems to suck for scanlation tasks. Never tried photoshop.

>>285500757
Did you ever experiment with local models?
>>
>>285501439
Hard to do so. Not only is the resolution different between the raw page and the final product but sometimes the changes are too widespread. To the point that it will better to replace the panel than to just copy and paste the redrawn part.
Note that I only use for individual panels, and I've only used it once. For everything else either hands or IOPaint do the job fine.
>>
>>285501346
>But the subtle changes puts me off.
Why? It's not like you use the whole image. Simple use mask (which should be one of the fist thing you make anyway) to select what you wanted to redraw, and copy on new layer, an hide/delete the rest.

>>285501702
>Did you ever experiment with local models?

Since the Saki manga gets its 20th anniversary this year, my plan is to make the excessive but online non-existent doujinshi library the series got over the decades more accessible. Scan first, then clean, redraw and translate select titles. Most doujinshi are the length of an average manga chapter so the work flow is not any different for most of them.

I'm reading an old translation of something written before AI was around and it seems a lot of it was mistranslated. I've seen people complaining about it over the years as well

I'm just wondering if AI is now better than someone who barely speaks japanese. I'm not uploading anything, just reading
>>
>>285510327
Japanese is a contextual language, so odds are it won't even be correct on which character is addressing which half the time.

It's barely better than N4 ESLs when it comes to nuance

Machine translation has been around for decades and every few years monolingual retards will claim that it has finally become good.
>>
>>285510745
>I'm just wondering if AI is now better than someone who barely speaks japanese.
Well, AI is much less likely to misread kanji, but it's not great at slang or expressions. There's also the issue that Japanese typically omits parts of sentences that you would find in English ones. So, it's guessing who's speaking to who.
>>
>>285510745
I use gemini as a second opinion because I'm too autistic and asocial to get a proofreader. It misinterprets things as often as traditional MTL but will do its best to bullshit them into sounding correct.

>is putting a single line and using very specific instructions to ensure that each word is maintained in good faith to the Japanese text, is parsed word by word with explanations and cultural relevance, maintains all thought processes such as conditionals and all words that do not match 1:1 with words in English are explained thoroughly using Japanese dictionaries and sources (ok this is getting long as fuck but you get the point) and THEN fixing it yourself using your own knowledge of Japanese but even more importantly your knowledge of native English to ensure that all of the contextual words that are required to be added so that it isn't just nonsensical babble the entire time while also not adding a single thing that would damage the original Japanese text or even slightly alter the perception one might have of a character etc. good?
Yeah I'd say so. But you will spend more time translating it than your average professional localization shitter does. Your work will be superior to 99.99% of the works in existence at the end of it all if that makes you feel better though.

Anon, I've played around with AI translation on and off. It typically couldn't even distinguish between sentences like, "I did this." vs "You did this." It's also very dicey at determining character gender even if it's the type that's scanning the artwork of the page.
>>
>>285512838
Stop using shit models.
>>
>>285512849
I use the most current models. They're still highly flawed.
>>
>>285511618
I do feel conflicted about this because our redrawer insists on redoing the sfx when it's easier to just put a sign like on the right
>>
>>285512849
But sir, these are our best models!
>>
A.I. will mistranslate character names unless you provide it with the furigana reading.

A.I. will take sentences that omit subject and guess at the subject, being wrong half the time.

A.I. will scan the page of the manga, but will misjudge gender if girl has short hair or guy has long hair.

It doesn't do the work for it. It requires heavy babysitting to have a competent result.
>>
>>285512849
In other words, "stop using AI", because all models are shit
>>
>>285513067
My favorite is when the manga has a girl named Ai or Kokoro, and you have to instruct it that these are people and not the words "love" or "heart".
>>
>>285513067
How long until we get a model that you can give it all the chapters so far for context, so it can learn all the characters' names, appearances and speech patterns?
>>
>>285513118
You can already do that.
>>
>>285513118
Honestly, if you give it a few paragraphs summary of the plot/genre and feed it panels of the characters, explaining who they are, that would likely help alot.

As long as it saves that for reference, future uploads to it would hopefully be more consistent.

The manga can be hard to follow but it's always been that way. It's also quite a few volumes in and sales haven't dropped so it's unlikely to be axed soon. I'd assume it's someone who binged it recently and lost interest when they had to wait for chapters. I've been translating a series and saved up like 10-20 chapters (still haven't typeset it yet), but then someone else translated it and he's released 5 chapters so far. Should I just give up and let him do it? He's releasing a chapter like every two or three weeks.

Well, actually it's an ecchi ntr manga so the reception wasn't that good on dex, I've been thinking to release it on panda but I don't know if it's allowed there.
>>

>>
>>285554182

If it's a serialized non-h manga then probably not. If it was only released as tankoubon and it never appeared in any magazine then you have a chance.
>>
Sorry for asking it here, but a doujin that I want to read only has a Chinese TL (they refused to share the raws). I've tried using ocr to capture the Chinese TL and then used chatgpt/gemini to translate it back to Japanese, but it reads like a broken MTL. >>

MD don't delete anything they don't get an explicit DMCA for
it'll take possibly years for them to realize you're pirating and go through the paperwork of taking it down
also each chapter needs to get DMCAd individually, which is why everyone keeps uploading new chapters of nuked series without issues, it'll be years until they get a second strikedown
>>
>>285555430
>also each chapter needs to get DMCAd individually
I don't believe this to be the case unless you think Japanese lawfirms wasted their manpower to file tens of thousands of DMCA claims instead of filing it for the series itself as intellectual property.
>>
>>285555462
If it were that easy, don't you think everyone would DMCA everything instantly?
Why do you think there exist proxy agencies that handle finding pirate sites and sending DMCAs to them? It's a multi-person full-time job. Filling out URLs for 8 hours per day.

It can easily be automated if they are serious about it. They just aren’t.

You can't do it instantly, it still takes years to do it because you need to reach out to responsible parties and prove your case.
>Filling out URLs for 8 hours per day.
That's not exactly what they do in this case. If they did then they would need to file a separate DMCA claim for each page because of how Mangadex operates and generates URLs.

Not sucking when it comes to scanlation just means there's nothing that would make EOP readers think there's something iffy going on with the translation like blatant ESL or dialogue not making any sense. Yuri slop translations seems pretty good at that.

>>285560184
I know ALL the theory behind it and I can assure you that >>285560456 is right. There are too many lossy steps involved and shit like paper quality, scanner and display configuration and even the daytime and season can influence the quality you get. Just go for something that looks good enough.

But I can give you a few things to keep in mind:
- if you level at all, level BEFORE you blur it or run any filters
- you don't need to level individual colors. That is for camerafags only.
- minimal leveling should be enough +/-10 max
- try to find color references on the artist's pixiv
- adjust the vibrance after blurring, if your colors look washed
- never use the descreen option on the scanner. Use Topaz Denoise + Clean to blend them together if you want to go the extra mile.

I wonder if there's a timeline where people on 4chan are arguing about the merits of keeping pronouns untranslated or even keeping word beautification to better understand the ~super deep nuance~ of keigo.
Like if the early fansubs chose to keep those things untranslated but ditched the honorifics. And in that 'verse innit rages about how all translators are stupid plebs because they're keeping in pronouns and word beautification while completely ignoring honorifics.

EOPs on Xitter are the most entitled fags I've seen, even worse than Webtoon readers. They've been having almost a week-long meltdown over Bato's shutdown and harrassing Korean authors instead of just shutting the fuck up about it. We all know scans are illegal and only 10% at best of them actually help sales (and usually only boost sales of series that were already mega popular in Japan and would've been localized regardless of scans), just google the next scan site and suck it up. If they actually cared about archiving they'd be torrenting for file quality and seeding to provide the "unseen gems" to others. All that energy spent whining and arguing could've been used to at least follow and give engagement to their favorite authors on Twitter or heckle scanlators into actually putting the author's socials/manga buying links on their credits pages. I swear it's only English speakers who try to make pirating moral instead of acknowledging the fact that they're engaging in behavior that's likely a net negative to authors for the sake of their own convenience and shutting up about it.

Something I like about reading comments is that you start to recognize commenters and notice how funny some of these guys behavior is.
Like I had someone swear up and down that he is dropping the manga after a villainess was shown to have been forced to do the things she did. A few chapters later she dies and the dude chimes in to celebrate her death, after not commenting since he said he dropped it.

No, like, if you ask people if they prefer good translation over AI, most will agree. And I guess about half will agree that they prefer AI over bad translation. And almost all of them will agree that they rather have AI translation, than no translation at all.
In the same vein, if you ask people if they prefer proper redraws over AI redraws, almost all of them will make confused Pikachu face and say they don't care either way.

no it would be interesting. to know what goes on behind all that
of course you would have to have some kind of entertainment value, not just silently type in notepad
>>
>>285592521
I meant the whole thing, cleaning & redrawing (some stuff, just enough so it's not confusing in the places that the text won't cover), and then typesetting & translating at the same time. It'd probably be as entertaining as vtubers drawing illustrations. Which is not much anyway.
>>
>>285592682
I can see highly scripted edutainment for weebs being moderately entertaining but just plain translation? Not unless you're piggybacking of manga with a relatively big following.

You could totally do that. If you're entertaining enough of a clown to get big enough for corpos/platforms to care that what you're doing is technically illegal you can just pivot to reacting to other people content or playing gaymes like the rest of streamer clowns.

I did that for a couple of years because I was using a very shitty old notebook at work and I thought that linux was my only option. Wine+PS didn't work at all because of the low specs.

Looking back I feel like a total cuck for enduring GIMP for so long when better options were just as free.

I pirated PS2025 and is way more than fine without any subscriptions. The only thing you can't use is the AI as a service bullshit, but the local remove tool and spot healing tool still run laps over all the competition. (specially fucking GIMP)
You can install whatever you want in w11 too as far as I know, you just have to enable some "sideload" setting or whatever.

Pirating MS Office is as easy as pirating Windows itself. Regedit nonsense was the time when KMS activator was the shit (c.a. 2014) but now nobody bothers with that nonsense since there's a better solution. You should dig into MS' graveyard.

Real, tourists claim to be for something while not actually knowing what said thing is about is a classic tale as old as time.
They say "preservation" when they really mean "I just want my shit for free yo". And then when people try to actively preserve things, they just ignore it and enjoy MTL shit like a damn dime novel.

Honestly, makes me want to just quit while we are behind. Let the kids suffer the endless slop.

CSP or PS?
>>
>>285606280
Typesetting in CSP is miles behind Photoshop in my experience. CSP can be better if you're only redrawing there and plan to typeset in PS, but you better be sure that during typesetting you won't have to go back and fix something, because that'll be annoying. I tried that for a chapter or two and found that it's just more convenient to do everything in PS.

Lately I've been having more problems with Windows than on Linux.
It's ironic you say that when just a few days ago I booted my Windows partition and it deleted my fucking GPU drivers for no apparent reason after a Windows Update.
That made me decide to nuke the Windows partition as I don't really have any use for it anymore.

And a few months ago, when I got my new motherboard, the wifi, bluetooth and ethernet card was not working.
I had to manually download drivers from the motherboard website from another computer and install them from a USB pen drive to get them working.
On Linux? Everything worked out of the box.

Anyway, for anyone thinking they really need Adobe, you should watch this:

I'm dying to see how this will be mangled in the post:

But the mangaka typeset in CSP, don't they?
>>
>>285607284
Mangaka don't typeset, that's editor work.
>>
>>285607284
Actually many mangaka WIP versions of pages I've seen have handwritten text. And a lot of metadata from Bookwalker pages suggests they're exported using Photoshop anyway, so I don't know how many professionals use the CSP typesetting.

I'm spending so much more time on basic cleaning and typesetting than translating. Does this mean I actually speak Japanese or that I suck ass at graphics?
>>

Bing finds Beths Shitty Handwriting on some Chinese sites. But though it looks similar enough, it's obviously not the same.

>>285608096
What happened with that for them to pay attention to redraw, not to mention praising it?

>>285609166
Yeah, that's banana. Not even pro. This time it didn't distort image too much, so it all more or less fit right. I actually tried to see if it could remove all screentones after redrawing and leaving only line art, but it didn't work.

Can’t you just only blend the blackest levels of the banana layer

If you had 105 IQ, you'd find the Japanese Wikipedia article this is copied from, and copy from the English version of it.

It was a very hard panel with multiple texts in different sizes on the art, taking two thirds of it. I would have needed more than a day to do it the regular way or even with IOPaint.
They also praised my typesetting, which did take a while and required me to work with the TL to get it right. But still, I wish they thanked me for one of the other harder pages I've did manually. I did have to add a missing part that wasn't added properly on Banana afterward so there is that.

I just had an idea for banana to redraw and then remove all screentones at the same time (since there's only so much can be done for free), and tested it one some random image. The manga I work on actually has better image quality and more visible/bigger screentones, and since banana fucking them up anyway and then removing them is a pain in the ass, most of the time it would be better to have only line art. I'm sure it can be done with the right promt.

Yeah, kinda like this one >>285610126 I tested it now again, and it more or less worked, though it being non-pro banana, it fucked image up as usual. The prompt was:

>>
>>285612313
People mostly go for generic southern because it's very recognizably different. The main idea to get across is "different dialect".
>>
>>285612447
No, I'll translate it to normal English and add a few notes and keep a few flavor words/phrases from the actual dialect because I'm not some fag that needs to de-Japanify the script every chance I get. This isn't quite as hard as you'd think and its better than just including a bunch of random western dialects that may as well be smothering out the Japanese culture of the work.
The main problem I'm running into with translating is pronouns. I keep getting stuck between whether to include them or not, its tough to do stuff like uchi-ra and atashi because it feels relevant to the character speech and losing it hurts but then the whole thing will become annoying to read for some people and I keep flip flopping back and forth on this. Also for certain kinds of honorifics when its like o-mizu should I just put o-water?

"This esteemed water" to provide the same level of respect the Japanese text is presenting. Same with o-mise being "esteemed shop" or "esteemed establishment" depending on context. EOPs won't understand what "o-" is supposed to be otherwise.

I don't think you need to look down on people that much. A TL note explaining how o- adds politeness and respect should be enough for people to learn. Why does everyone act like English speakers will get mind broken over this kind of stuff? A fair portion of the people reading probably won't even actually understand the word esteemed without a dictionary and they'll be able to learn that if they want to, but the o- honorific? No English person could ever learn that even if it was explained to them on the side.
>>
>>285613852
>No English person could ever learn that even if it was explained to them on the side.
Which is why a TL note won't suffice.
