Recently, I've come up with a theory: In the 24th century, science has progressed to a point where the speed of aging is half of what it was in the 21st. This means that all the characters' stated ages correspond with the length of Aqua years, not Manhome ones. Everyone's "actual" ages (going by Manhome standards) are double that of what we've been led to believe. Since the year lengths are such a noticeable difference, Akari quickly adjusted to describing her age in Aqua years. As an example: A 24th-century 28-year-old on Manhome physically matches what a 21st-century 14-year-old would look like. If that person were to move to Aqua, they'd indeed be referred to as a 14-year-old, since an Aqua year equals two Manhome ones.
