I mean the precog is really important in the current arc (if hiatus ever ends) since it's basically a battle between two precogs. Serie has given away most of her best precog spells and all the mages who asked for it have been picked off. Basically all the Continental Magic Association mages are being held hostage because a future where Serie survives by hiding, the killer goes on a rampage against all her mages. So she can successfully survive because the killer isn't a better mage and can't beat her traps/hiding skills, but they can take all the people from her. So she has to accept a future where she dies so that everyone else can live. I imagine Schlat vs HOTS was the same, where any time the sages didn't team up he just picks them off. Schlat also knows about Frieren and his goal goes even beyond the demon king, so we still don't know how far ahead Schlat's plan is other than he wants demons to survive 1000 years into the future. My personal theory is in the end the goddess transforms demons to be "reborn" as non-human eaters or something.
