Contemporary Asian home cooking is pretty funny. Because they're often super anal about small details but then make tons of use of premade mass-produced ingredients like ready-made jarred sauces. Like find me a Japanese housewife that can make curry without using a store bought cube and I'll give you a handjob. >>285567444Thanks. I usually try my luck with Shincaps, but even though they uploaded 2 files for this episode, from 2 different sources, none had any subs.

>>285567722Shincaps is one of the only other TV rippers and rips at a higher quality than Nanako, but releases .ts sources that often don't contain subs (at least that I find, sometimes on Jimaku I see subs with Shincaps filenames but I assume they're ripped from the .ts file but none of the files I've ever downloaded contained them or had them when opened with like mkvtoolnix). Either way just stick with Nanako and check the description on NF/AMZN releases, or use Jimaku. >>285569386Good direction too.
>>285569800I love how real that was. It's exactly the kind of thing an awkward teenager desperate for approval would do without considering how it would come across. Then it was followed by her impression of how she imagined Makio's reaction based on her memories of her mother (who seems socially "well-adjusted" but desperate for approval if Makio's impression of her is even remotely accurate). Then we get Asa's flashbacks of Makio's "I can't promise I will love you" speech and Makio's actual sincere-but-extremely-awkward reaction.Every single scene hurts so good.
I can feel how immature Asa is here, which means she’s written very well. I can feel how conflicted both of them are because of their differences in personality. The conflict feels so real. Finally, Asa’s loneliness is shown here in a way that feels very human. I can see that she’s finally able to express her complex feeling, that something a kid would naturally struggle with, especially when it comes to loving her mom. And as an anime enjoyer, I can see signs that her big sister actually loves her little sister, but Makio probably misinterprets it, and the big sister is just showing her love in a different way.

I wonder if the manga's original author read The Courage to Be Disliked or is just such a core of Japanese philosphy that it's present in multiple books. Makio's approach to just letting Asa be and not burden her with anything she thinks is correct reminds me of how this book emphasized interacting with people as they are and refusing to praise, berate or attempt to emotionally influence them in any way and treating them as equals and only assisting them if it's being requested of them
>>285570575>Why isn't she giving a kid whose mother just died detailed accounts of what a shitty person she was?
>>285570575>would it really be that hard to explain why she hates her?Makio is the only person Asa has in her life. She's still going through grief. Would you say to them that their dead parents were pieces of shit and that you were terribly hurt by the way they acted?Do you think a 15yo can calmly listen to that? If she doesn't like what Makio says, where would she ran to? It's a 2 bedroom apartment. And for what, so she can finally selfishly settle a matter she has partly dealt with after decades?Part of growing up is killing your parents in the sense that you realize they are human beings, with their own faults. You develop a different relationship with them, and sometimes you learn why they acted in a certain way when you were a kid. If you had a shitty childhood, that can sometimes heal you.In Asa's case, her parents are literally dead. If she reached some conclusion, there's no one alive to correct her, or provide a different PoV.

>>285571497Technically no. It isn't asa's buisness why she feels that way about her sister, BUT having that kind of thing at the back of her mind all the time is going to color her perception of makio forever until it's cleared up. It may even change the way she feels about her mom, if she ends up understanding makio to some extent, which would probably not be a good thing to have her retroactively start hating her mom because she was a bitch to her aunt. Basically, no, Makio doesn't owe her an explanation. But Makio is doing exactly what she warned Asa not to do in the last episode. She's not opening up to a person she probably should be opening up to. Makio has unresolved feelings about her sister and telling them to Asa will probably help her, but she's not ready to deal with that, so in the meantime Asa will go through some amount of suffering. She knows that Makio sees her mom in her, so she knows she isn't going to be loved by Makio. But love is what she probably needs the most of right now.

I didn't get the significance of this. She made a fresh cup without washing the previous one (i.e., falling back to bad habits)? No lunch?>>285561146The only part that should've been included is the ex's talk about how his parents raised him, which was similar to Makio's. It would explain why her family dynamics were like that (i.e., somewhat cold and full of judgement).I'm sure they're going to pack all that into a different episode and flesh it neatly. The thing about any manga as a medium is that it doesn't need to stick to a single thread. It allows abrupt changes, flashbacks, PoV changes, etc. The medium is literally designed to turn the page and maybe find something entirely new, whereas anime has music and stuff. Disjointed scenes don't work as well, less so in 20 minute chunks, even less so if the direction aims to have a slow steady pace.

What's Makio's deal with her sister anyways? Was she ego-raped that badly?
>>285573218To be fair, it wasn't out of nowhere. They were talking about their parents specifically, so her mentioning her parents died is >on topic. Also, she immediately mentioned her aunt, who is a novelist, so it could seem like she's trying to equate her aunt to her parental figure to fit in. Plus, she didn't say when her parents died, so they could have understood it as her parents passed away a long time ago and she's comfortable with mentioning it directly because she's already healed from the pain (this is obviously not true, but they could think this)
>>285573369She said exactly why she was angry then and she says exactly why she was so upfront with it this time.
>>285573369That was a different contextGraduating middleschool is like an "end" to that chapter of her life, and she wanted it to end how it was most of the time. Starting highschool is a new chapter so it's fine to be different here. Plus, the most important thing you're missing here is control. At her graduation she wasn't the one telling people. The choice was made for her against her will. Now she's actively choosing to bring it up because she's in control. It's a bit nuanced, but it shouldnt be hard for you to understand the differences here, anonkun
>>285573369>>285571666They talked about making their high school debut earlier in the episode. Asa likes to be noticed, as long as it is on her terms and not just as a public spectacle. Asa didn't stand out academically or physically so she tried to stand out by bringing up something special about herself - that she was an orphan who lived with her aunt. This was a reveal she could control and express on her own terms to peers in a way she imagined was advantageous to herself, socially. What she didn't realize in the moment, is that's socially fucking retarded to drop on a group of people who were chatting about how embarrassing their own parents were. People that she didn't know and who didn't know her. Immediately afterward, she realized how bad that looked and how they paved right over that reveal to continue talking to one another as they were. So her bombshell was a dud and only made her the weird girl who shares stuff about being an orphan in the middle of a conversation.

>>285573544I would keep being her friend after that
>>285573569But those are from makio's perspective, which could be biased because of her feelings already. It's not difficult to interpret things in a negative way when you already got a negative view of the person. I will admit that her telling makio to grow up when it came to her novels is brutal, though. Perhaps we will learn that she behaved that way because of some level of envy. If asa's mother hated her sister, too, then I doubt she would be calling her makiochan. It wouldn't surprise me if asa reveals that her mom had nothing but nice things to say about makio

>>285574929It isn't pretending to care. It is caring while holding a duality or triality of emotions about it. Makio does resent Asa's presence to some extent. She resents her for spoiling her quietude. For reminding Makio of her sister constantly. For having so many problems that Makio is now forced to be responsible for dealing with. But she does care about Asa and feel responsibility and love towards her. She isn't angry about having to comfort Asa or anything like that. Not excited at the prospect, but not resenting the necessity of having to help a young girl with no family cope with the world. These can exist side by side.
>>285574929Makio looked concerned when Emiri left, after telling her Asa was sleeping yet again. She bought her celebratory pizza. She's constantly nagging about not leaving her diary wide open. >>285581362
People already thought Makio was being a jerk this episode. Imagine if they didn't cut this.
I thought this anime would be garbage, but it's pretty good
It was funny seeing Asa thinking Makio is angry at her/neglecting her and wondering aloud what she should do for dinner. Then Makio hears her and immediately comes out of her room, quickly whips up something for her to eat, and goes right back to work leaving Asa utterly confused.
The thing I'm most upset about is that they cut Asa throwing a hissy fit while crying. She's so cute. And Makio being even more autistic than in the anime, not even understanding how she hurt her at first.
>>285576432just use an AI
>>285581258I feel like this sentiment will come to the fore with the drama with Minori's diary, at least that's my assumption for why the screenwriter could feel comfortable cutting this out>>285581403This is much harsher impasse between the two women than what was presented in the anime and I'm slightly bummed about the anime "softening" Makio's character because she doesn't act like such jerk again
>>285573721This is honestly a problem in even Western fiction. Therapy as a way to resolve a character's issues isn't as poetic, cool, or interesting as characters somehow naturally getting 80% of the way to being reformed/healed/more self-aware via other narrative tools like conflicts with other characters. Japan seems even more careful about mental health shit. Even something like Spacewalking with You which is a stupid guy with ADHD making friends with an autist never says the words autism or ADHD out loud. I doubt it would've won all those awards and been ranked as #1 for male readers if it had outright said the guy has autism since that turns off a lot of Japanese readers who get the ick from things stated so outright in the same way that some Westerners will get cagey as soon as they sense a story has "woke" elements.
>>285581258Hopefully they bring that in next episode because that is a huge thing to cut, damn. Give's Asa's character some teeth.

>>285587343>Oh my god, you fucking idiots are crying about muh they skipped this page and this panel, how could they do it????The show is about the subtle emotional expressions of its characters. Any plot is secondary to seeing the states of mind of the men and women. If you trim too much we lose too much of that and we start to lose context for what happens later. >>285597973Recalling samples of her writing from the manga, that doesn't really apply. It's more shoujo crap. She relies on her audience having seen or read lotr or any fucking isekai ever for any fantasy settings.
>>285596474BL
>>285598115What do you mean by "does not apply"? A writer wanting to have shit to look at when they don't recall what some character wore or looked like? Where some made up country was located? >It's more shoujo crapWhat are you even doing in this thread except acting like an asshole and spewing thoughtless nonsense?
>>285598256>BLNah, she doesn't look like the fujoshi-type.
>>285592294why is Makio in a permanent state of messy sex hair?
>>285593927These shows are always propaganda to make you want to marry and reproduce.
>>285601162but Makio has Asa, and she neither married nor reproduced
>>285593927>>285601162I did feel that Ikoku Nikki counts as an Abe core anime that makes you want children but it's quite different from the usual. For one, Asa is a teenager which allows it to capture certain intricacies about raising children that most parenting anime won't because the child is usually much younger. The teenage years are a very complex and delicate time. A teenage girl is arguably the most troublesome thing to parent and the show doesn't shy away from that while still making Asa extremely lovable.
>>285597307With relatively minimalist anime art, teenagers can only really be distinguished from adults by size.
>>285596644Yeah, you'd at least expect some stacks of coffee table books for getting inspiration from for settings and the like.
>>285561086Autismo moment.
>>285557556I am glad we finally get another Josei adaptation.
>>285557556just picked up and I wish I'd followed from the start. Every interaction feels very rich and it's interesting to see how Asa's and Makio's particular hangups affect the way they act and react.>>285587765Is it worth watching first with whatever changes are made or are they too big to put off?
>>285572625I think it's the fact that she got a second cup without realizing because of the stressful situation she was in.>>285572817That would make sense if she didn't have to leave her workspace for more coffee.
They both should have been guys and this an incest bl
>>285606414>are they too big to put off?As of now, no big changes. It's a bit... streamlined. Since it's airing now I'd say watch it, but definitely do check out the manga after.
>>285561086She's lucky she looks presentable.
Love this show. I want to protect her smile.
>>285606414Odd question, imo if you have the time there's no particular reason not to also read the manga. It has great color pages at least, genuine GIWTWM for women.
>>285572643>None of them would have that kind of life experience or jaded emotional distance at that age.y-yeah, who would be totally emotionally numb before they even hit their teens, because they realized very early that sharing anything gets you totally ostracized and ridiculed by everyone around you, h-haha, that would be so weird right
>>285607996A lot of people, actually. The stats on child abuse and neglect are pretty rough.
>>285606801excited to see what cute face she makes next episode
>>285574110If you're making sentence cards just run the audio through AI to get a transcript and use actual subs for the timings. Unless the characters are screaming it's like 99% accurate now, I occasionally have to correct missed kana/kanji but it's really good. AI can't do timing at all though so it can't give you actual JP subs but you probably want to be listening to anime rather than reading it anyway.I just finished mining Magipoka lol.
>>285561146Oh really, I guess I could see how scenes would be skipped in this type of work.
I wish I could trust the manga's translation more. This line is totally the opposite of the anime and seems to miss the point of the following flashback. The line could have been changed for the anime of course, but I'm not sure about this TL.
>>285613323Raw page.I don't know Japanese.
>>285596644Children of the whales is shit
>>285613323In context, the previous page has the ex saying "Makio-CHAN huh? That's fresh" because Makio wasn't the type to be called chan. That's the main topic of the conversation, not whether she was a novelist or not.In the manga, the first bubble is quoting what Asa's mother used to say: "Makio-CHAN is a novelist".In the second part, Asa is basically saying "so even though I hardly ever met (Makio) before, I never got the feeling (she wasn't the type of person that would be called -CHAN)". So basically, Asa always heard Makio mentioned as Makio-CHAN.Not a good translation. Maybe they thought that "novelists" in general would not let others use chan, but it's not what the Japanese says.t. studying Jap for 1.25 year (1500 hs put in).
>>285610964A cute.
>>285613762I think they let their image of the flashback meaning that Asa's mother was always ashamed of Makio being a writer change the translation.Instead of the line being about how Asa's mother later became proud of her sister, they mixed up the grammar accidentally to turn it into a denial.
