The company can make any claims they want, but I don't believe for a second they've worked closely with Shirow on the matter nor that he really knows or cares about the current state of manga in the US. Maintaining the censorship for Kondansha has always meant the individual volumes can be more easily sold at mainstream retailers and without the need for shrinkwrap. That said, they'll soon be publishing an uncensored version of GitS 1, though only available in what for many will be an expensive box set. Again, I don't believe for a second this was the result of some serious discussion with Shirow. They'll keep the cheaper, censored material on the market, since it's evergreen, but they can push a new, expensive SKU, with the selling point being it's finally more faithful to the Japanese version of the comics.

It's always funny that the 1995 movie gets credit for being "deep" and "psychological" but severely kneecaps what it's trying to achieve by cutting all the personality, humor and "childishness" of the OG manga.
