Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the eighteenth volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.

MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.

Previous thread: >>285485645

I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ (despite my issues with it). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

"Q: Tell us what you consider to be the single best movie scene!!

Someone referred to Sasuga as she in another thread, but I assumed they were wrong. I also assume VIZ is wrong here (I think they used he before for Sasuga). But I'll be honest, I can't say for sure. Furinkan has a note regarding this, but I'll post it in a bit. But yeah, Nanoka's lines here were ええ!? 華紋さんには敬語!?
>>
>>285670824
Here's that note I mentioned: "Hakubi addresses Kamon as "Kamon-sama" a deferential way of referring to one's senior. Despite the respectful manner of address he still speaks in a rather rude way to Kamon, making for an interesting conversation between the two, hence Kamon's friendly smile even as he tells Hakubi he won't let him have the chest."

In regards to the second panel, VIZ seems to have rewritten the line to be sarcastic or sardonic. The original line was まったくとんだ腰抜けだ。Kamon's response was similarly adjusted, the first line of it originally was just 相変わらずマジメだねえおまえは。
>>
>>285670917
Nanoka's and Hyakka's responses seem a bit rewritten. Nanoka originally said うそっ。and Hyakka said いや、本音だろう。
>>
>>285670972
Kamon's line had emphasis dots on おまえら.
>>
>>285670995
End of chapter. The side dish line sounds like someone translating Japanese too directly, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Unless I am missing something. Hakubi goes ついでに百火おまえもな。 and Hyakka responds with はあ!? ついでってなんだてめえ。

Term used in the title was 成長. Cute little home scene on the cover.

For reasons that will always be beyond me, VIZ decided to go with this for Nanoka's first line but it originally was 紙の形代が・・・. Here's Furinkan's note for the term: "Katashiro (形代) are paper dolls or alternatively the term can also be used to refer a paper, wood, or cloth item that is meant to represent a sacred object. " We've seen them a lot in MAO and VIZ doesn't seem to ever be consistent about what they want to call them.

>>285671690
Pretty one too.
>>
>>285671775
Per Furinkan: "When Otoya comments on rumors of ... katashiro floating through the air of the capital he uses the term "teito" (帝都). This is word that is used to refer to Tokyo, literally meaning "the imperial capital". Though the word is still sometimes used to refer to Tokyo, it was used more frequently during the days of the "Empire of Japan" prior to the American occupation in 1947."

"Q: Tell us a work (be it a movie, manga, novel or anything else) that never fails to warm your heart!
A: I read Chiikawa everyday."
Furinkan's Note: Nagano's Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu or Chiikawa for short is a Twitter manga that has been serialized since January 2020.

I knew it was popular, but I didn't expect Rumiko Takahashi to read it. I wonder if I should check it out. I don't really know anything about it.

I'll be honest, I have no idea. You rarely hear Rumiko Takahashi mention anyone specifically. I do know that Kuniko Saito one of her assistants from Diary of Kemo Kobiru is a manga artist, but I know it from the blurb included in Furinkan's translation of an interview with her: https://www.furinkan.com/features/interviews/saito.html

I guess it would be possible to go through all her "thanks to" sections on the ending pages of her manga (since those do have assistants listed) and see if anyone there has gone on to make a major hit, but I feel like we'd know of them if that were the case. Not sure though. As for how much assistants do vs. Rumiko herself, I really am curious too. Maybe you can read that Saito interview (I haven't gotten to it yet, it is actually relatively recent). I did read this article, which I think says pretty clearly that the major work is all Rumiko Takahashi: https://www.furinkan.com/features/articles/lawsuit.html but it has been some time.

Furinkan notes that: "In explaining why she did not particularly want Kagari to return home, Ayame explains that she would not forget her sister cursed her, and that their homelife would never be calm anymore. She says that for Kagari being at home would be like a "bed of needles" (針の筵/hari no mushiro). This is an idiom meaning a set of circumstances where someone feels ill at ease and can never relax, an unbearable place. The idiom is particularly apt given the needles the Hosho family use in their curses."

End of chapter. Per Furinkan: "The names Tenko gives for the village in the mountains is "Ryukotsu Village" (dragon bone village/竜骨沼) also known as "Hitomigoku no Mura" (the village of human sacrifice/人身御供の村). Just for clarity sake, "Ryukotsu" (Dragon Bone) can be translated literally, but it also is the term used for "keel", the raised center portion on the bottom of a boat."

Sasuga uses 蛟くん here. Otoya sometimes has very human lines and I wonder if it is a VIZ thing or just in the original work. I checked the original line and seemed the same but I am working off machine translation. If someone wants to confirm, I'd appreciate it. まだあるのですね。文明開花から五十年も経っているのに、人身御供の慣習を守る村が・・・

Also, Furinkan has a note: "There are records of human sacrifices made in Japan, with some remote mountain villages continuing to do so until modernization took place (which is likely the reference that Otoya makes to the village becoming open to civilization fifty years prior which would align with the Meiji Restoration of the 1870s). A list of various human sacrifices made historically in Japan that roughly align with the circumstances depicted in this chapter can be read here."

They link to a Japanese wikipedia article that I absolutely did not click on.

Per Furinkan: "Mao overhears the phrase being chanted by the priest and then tells the villages after rescuing Sachiko that the phrase is simply to stop nosebleeds. The phrase is not invented by Takahashi but is an actual folk belief that truly is believed to stop nosebleeds just as Mao indicates. The phrase is, "あつたのみやのこがくれに色あるむすめとまらざりけり。。。" (Atsuta no miya no kogakure ni iro aru musume tomarazarikeri...)."

I can't verify this claim. Googling the little bit that Furinkan posted didn't get me much and it is all obviously on Japanese websites. I assume it isn't common knowledge if it is true, but I have no clue. I do think the idea that a village killed many, many people using the wrong spell in a world where magic is real is incredibly dark humor. Like in a series where this stuff was all fake, I feel this would hit a bit different.

End of chapter, end of volume. Thanks anyone who read along, but also thanks anyone who reads it after. I completely understand. I wish the box stuff resolved itself a bit quicker, but I did like the Kagari stuff. I really need one of the New Goko Clan to actually turncoat at some point though or it is going to be hard to build tension during these chapters.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything MAO related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be dumping volume 19 on Thursday. In addition, I will be dumping the 2023 Big Comic Original one-shot by Rumiko Takahashi. So, I will dumping 金の力 or The Power of Money in that thread!

Thanks OP! Not a very plot-heavy chapter, but the action and Kagari bullying were fun. And the human sacrifice village is one of my favorite arcs in terms of the merging of tradition and modernity that characterizes the Taisho era in Mao. Plus, I love how nonchalantly cruel it is.

Per Furinkan: "Rumiko Takahashi published her seventh entry in the "Wednesday's Diary" column of Shonen Sunday. This entry discusses food. Takahahsi discusses a few dishes she has cooked for the first time in 25 years such as stuffed peppers, the cheese grater she bought, a lotus root soup she had and red kitsune noodles which she shows Mao and Nanoka blowing on due to their "cat's tongue" (meaning they are sensitive to hot liquids). The text at the bottom is not from Takahashi and is labeled "post-editorial note"."

I imagine it has to do with the root meaning of the word being "religious boundary". A boundary separates two places (hence barrier), but inversely, if you magically create a "boundary" between two disconnected places, then crossing that boundary should take you from the one place to the other.

>Googling the little bit that Furinkan posted didn't get me much and it is all obviously on Japanese websites.
i googled 鼻血あつたのみや (nosebleed atsuta no miya) and i seem to be getting results
this one says it's from tokushima prefecture
>https://crd.ndl.go.jp/reference/entry/index.php?id=1000349394&page=ref_view
it also has other chants and things to stop the bleeding, the line right above the atsuta no miya one even recommends that someone of the opposite sex should grab their own ball or boob to help you

>>She is regularly made to drink a smoothie which suppresses her spiritual power
i know we don't see much of nanoka in modern times besides on chapter covers nowadays, but i don't think she drinks the smoothie anymore, so shouldn't that be turned into past tense?
