Tournaments = lazy idea
>>285698444They have a place in stuff like sports/martial arts series but i just roll my eyes when they're shoehorned into something they don't belong in. Often feels like editor meddling or the mangaka running out of ideas and needing an easy way to introduce a bunch of new characters and pad out the series while cooking up ideas for future arcs.
>>285698453I don't get it
>>285698444>tournaments in non-action series
>>285698738They can work if done right
>>285698738I want to see a tournament arc in a harem/romance anime
I hate when they introduce a bunch of useless characters and then you have to read/watch through all of their fights knowing 87.5% of those characters will never be relevant again.
I liked how he did it in the Buu Saga where he set up Goku and Vegeta fighting in the tournament, but then the tournament got interrupted, and then they ended up fighting anyway later but more dramatically.
Tournaments are only typically bad because their is an MC
The round of the Dark Tournament in Yu Yu Hakusho where they fight the elemental ninja guys was so good, I feel like you could make a manga where the entire thing is in that format.
>>285698444tournaments are my favorite part of every game and manga I read
>>285702489negima did it
>>285698738The one in Berserk was just shit in particular.
>>285698444If a battle manga doesn't have a huge tournament arc in it then it's an unserious series and I won't be reading it.
>>285698444(You) = Faggot
>>285703474if they were serious they wouldn't be battlemanga
>>285703307Same except very few do them right.
>>285698658People have no shame anymore.
>>285698444every tournament should be automatically replaced with the Dark Tournament arc meanwhile the authors should use the stalled time to come up with better arcs for their stories
>>285698444>subverts your expectations
>>285703550>very few do them rightsuch as?
>>285705280Togashi is the only one that does the "big event fizzles out into nothinburger" trope right desu
>>285702801Nothing Vegeta says or does in the Buu Arc comes comes close to Kaiba sacrificing God to beat Ishtar, or Joey beating Marik. Yu-Gi-Oh may not be battle shonen but you can see Ishtar getting wet from Kaiba's autism
>>285698444Most shonen events are just tournaments in disguise though, aren’t they?
Anon, have you ever participated in a tournament?
>>285702444Do you need to understand the rules to enjoy hikaru no go
>>285698444Why does Tien have only one ab per set?
>>285705772Tien is drawn in Toriyama's round style which is why characters are dynamic in Dragonball. Z style is angular because it's an action comic
>>285705334Because he doesn't know how to write
>>285705684Battle City tournament works well because the actual tournament is the conclusion of the arc. By the time it moves into the bracket format, it's already been pared down to just the characters and duels that are actually relevant and interesting. Every duel from the moment they board the battle ship is really good and advances the story.
>>285705280HxH was something else kek
>>285705280>>285703290Kinoooo
>>285702489didnt nagatoro have that
>>285708895How did Togashi not lose his job for this
>>285698444Dragon ball tournaments were great faggot
>>285705280just togashi being lazy again
>>285705772Toriyama only started drawing abs properly in the third budokai arc
>>285705334Togashi is the Kojima of manga in the sense that his fanboys will defend even his most objectively bad decisions
>>285705753Definitely not, Hikaru doesn't start off knowing the rules either
>>285705753nofor once, they tell you what they are doing "he is receding, I need to attack now, but if I do that I will leave my own position open for an attack, what should i do?!" etc.but they also teach you the basics throughout the first few arcs. Go is one of those games that are very easy to learn(due to very few rules) difficult to master
>>285698444It's funny how people always parroted that original DB is an adventure manga and then you read it and that's only true for the first arc, which is a grand total of 23 chapters, and then after that it's three tournament arcs and Goku genociding the Red Ribbon army. Then you get to Demon King Piccolo which is when you can see the Z groundwork come in.
>>285711680The things people say about Dragon Ball are almost entirely divorced from what's actually in it.
>>285698738>carole & tuesday>house md
>>285711680It's also funny how people downplay the notion of corralling an ensemble cast into one location by calling every instance of this a "tournament arc." Just like how Slice of Life is an abused term that means whatever anyone wants it to in the moment.
>>285706499The fights in the beginning of the arc were good too>Kaiba and Yugi teaming up against the mask bros>Yugi making an infinite slime loop decking out the opponent >Yugi beating Exodia to show that he didn't need the cards Weevil threw out>Dark Magician mirror match>Jono being a fucking retard and still winning somehow even though his opponents are cheating>Jono vs Yugi death matchhonestly the entire arc is super memorable and while it doesn't start as a strict tournament arc with matchups the qualifiers still count as part of the tournament
>>285705334Togashi has still done one of the biggest and best tournaments in YuYu Hakusho. Too bad people tend to focus more on the mediocre HxH.
>>285711680The only people that say that are retards that started with Z, never watched/read Dragonball, and try to defend that that was a good thing actually.
>>285712471There is also Joey beating the opponents that Yugi beaten on the former arc to prove that he has reached his level and winning without Red-Eyes.
>>285712483If you go back and read the Dark Tournament you remember that at least half of it was shit. The good parts are really good though.
>>285705687No
Tournament arcs are greatWhat's lazy are arcs that waste time on side characters jobbing or fighting fodder (see: every war arc ever)
>>285712601He beat them with a handicap even, but it also shows his new style that's not just summon big beater and equipping them with a weapon to hit over the opponent
>>285698444>Tournaments are a "lazy idea" for martial art practitioners... OOOOOOKAAAAAYYYYYWell, it seems that a little bit of criticism was all that was needed to mind break JJK fans.
>>285711680The problem is not saying that DB had adventure but when they pretend it was a dragon quest fantasy rpg adventure when that thing has never happened, it was a road movie/retro gag adventure with tons of dirty jokes, gags and focused on battles and fights, often resolved with humor or targeting the enemy's weak spot. The only adventure sequences I can remember outside of the first arc was that pirate base exploration during red ribbon arc, because most of this arc is pretty much fight sequences one after another and gags, very focused on fights during serious issues. Piccolo Daimao arc is not even an adventure, the only "adventure" here is seeing Roshi, Ten Shin Han and Chaozu searching for the balls.
