But then you see glimpses when the real hero comes out and suddenly you realize he's an absolute monster who considers poison that could kill elephants and wounds that should have him completely crippled for life are nothing more than annoyances to him, and he's not even worried about winning in that situation - he's only worried about his ability to protect Fern and Frieren being slightly impaired.
