>says this>actual audio doesn’t say itWhy do they do this?
>>285745760A lot of translators are failed/wannabe writers. So they use their translations as an outlet for their wasted creativity.
>>285745760>character says "hi">subtitles say "yeah">character says "yeah">subtitles say "no">character says "no">subtitles say "theater"why do they do this?
>>285746079Emphasis on failedYou know why translated novels suck even when the story is good? Because translators can't fucking write
I want the translations to be as accurate as possible, how does the industry fail to see the value in that?
>>285746115This kind of thing is the reason people don’t have any sympathy for them losing their job to AI
>>285746411Understandable, but very stupid Maybe they don't deserve any sympathy for losing their job But we need to not use AI to replace them
>>285746463Why not? If they’re using their job to be activists and fraudulent subtitles I don’t want it
>>285746566I didn't say we shouldn't replace them I said we shouldn't use AI to replace them
>>285746115>You know why translated novels suck even when the story is good? Because translators can't fucking writeIncorrect, because translators can write, especially historically most successful authors were also translators. Similarly today, most "serious" translators are either authors themselves or academics with enough skill to write something good themselves. These people do get paid serious money to produce something good.Of course, you don't need any proof of your writing abilties to translate anime, manga or video games and the quality doesn't matter.
>>285746368You don't understand what you mean when you say "accurate", you barely speak English.
>>285746683shut the fuck up trannylator
>>285747849how would you convey "shut the fuck up trannylator" in Japanese? It's not so easy to do, is it?
wow look at all this organic sentiment indicating how valuable ai translations will be
>>285748021Even as the technology matures and enters the commercialization phase, AI translations are worthless
>>285746647>Incorrectmy assactual great translators work for the GOVERNMENT
>>285745760The show is apparently about criminals pulling off heists so I kinda understand what they were going for, even if I don't necessarily agree with it
>>285745760It's a mystery.
>>285746368an accurate translation isn't accurate
>>285747960nice try nigger. you will never successfully gaslight anyone into believing that you need to add your own faggot leftist western twist to everything in order for it to be a remotely useful translation. nice try nigger, i say again. retard.
>>285745760Learn Japanese, EOP. Disney subs are literally dubtitles, not actual translations.
>>285748445You have no fucking clue who you're talking to or what they believe You're just raging about random shit and assuming anyone who disagrees even slightly is the exact person you're mad at
>>285746647My apologies, let me clarify THE translators can't fucking write
I dropped it early on but in addition to using AI for other languages, the English translation for this show was atrocious as well.
>>285745760
>>285748867literally not my problem
>>285745760>character says a word in english>english subtitles use a different wordInfuriating.
I miss the days when the biggest subbing/translation controversy was how to translate "pinchi" properly while the MC was holding pliers in Star Driver or Titans being called Eotens.
>>285746368Because if it sells anyways, why hire competent translators?
>>285752093I miss funny effect like the text going white to colored when the character was saying the name of his special technique
>>285752093Holy unc postShould you still be posting gramps
>>285752632Thank you kaizoku fansubs for putting in the effort when so many others... Didnt.
>>285746079So how's your novel going, anon?
>>285752632Kaizoku-Fansubs got to Enies Lobby? I remember it taking ages for them just to finish Skypiea.
>>285754164there are translators and there are troonslatorstranslators work in the dark with no fanfare, often not even signing their names, keeping complicated notes and making difficult judgment calls to ensure that something in language A is rendered as accurately as possible into language B. They seek no fanfare, as their paycheck alone is enough.Troonslators stand up jumping up and down, slapping their slackjawed beardface all over everything, trying to stand on other people’s work and tell the world “look how I ADAPTED this work into something BETTER, look at me, this is sailor pingas z by some japo TROONSLATED AND ADAPTED BY LORELEI “SEPHIROTHGURL” GREENBLATT-DIAMOND”they are anathema and abominationthey deserve a pox
>>285745760>>285746079This happens in dubs all the time. The worst part is when the translation is accurate, but then they add extra shit to presumably make it "funnier" or more "profound" when the situation doesn't call for itIn Spirited Away for instance when No Face is vomiting up gunk/people he swallowed, in the original Japanese he's not saying anything but in the English there are strange one-liners thrown in there like "Now that's an esophagus!" or "Excuse me (burps)". In an earlier scene there's also this exchange>Lin: (observing Chihiro and Haku) What's going on?>Kamaji in Japanese: Can't you see? It's love>Kamaji in English: Something you'll never understand, lovewhere the guy sounds unnecessarily like an asshole in the latter. Disney's gonna Disney
>>285746647sure, academic translators are highly qualified, but if you're able to translate 1900's novels, 1800's puppet plays, 1400's religious mantra's, and 1100's poetry, why the fuck would you ever care about translating modern manga
>>285754735I can only speak for myself but I translated manga on the side while working through my MA because I like the medium and wanted to share good translations of it with others. In fact, one of those manga (it was a supernatural story with scenes set in immediate post-WW2 Japan) gave me inspiration for what ultimately became my thesis. Some of the primary sources I was using also helped me understand the context of several scenes in a chapter or two. I've given up translating now because there's simply no time in the PhD program but you would be surprised. If I remember correctly Hox had a similar story, though he was much more proficient and prolific as a manga translator.
>>285754587Sounds like you're a faggot, anon. Nothing you described's in modern translations. You see one reference to Fort Knox and think it's commies inserting propaganda into anime.
>>285745760Retards with no self-awareness will do things retards with no self-awareness do.
>>285754689>hen they add extra shit to presumably make it "funnier"This is one of the strangest and most consistent elements of professional J->E translations for anime and video games. There's this insistence on inserting jokes everywhere, even into already existing jokes. I don't understand it.
>>285754970>one reference to Fort Knoxsorry zoomer but some of us have been seeing this shit for multiple decades and have an understanding of how things work
>>285752632I miss karaoke effects in subs bros...
>>285755067I've seen screenshots of translators claiming the original is too ''dry'' and actually they're doing you a service by inserting reddit jokes.
>>285745760Because they think their paying audience is full of dumb kids who would rather have it sound epic than accurately represent the Japanese script. They are probably right. There's also no QC to speak of. Official subs have plenty of dumb errors that would be very easy to spot if they gave any sort of fucks. One that really confused me though was a couple of years ago when, "The scales have fallen from my eyes" was translated to, "I have seen the light" despite already being an English idiom.
>>285746411>>285746463Most of these "translators" don't know Japanese and just use AI themselves.
>>285755768most of them don’t even know English either
>>285746113kek
>>285748162This never made sense to me, like yes obviously Pili is a Taiwanese company but the story is being written by a Japanese guy and the version that everyone is watching is the one with Japanese Seiyuu who are using Japanese naming conventions. If I were watching in Mandarin or MinNan I would be fine with it but it gets tedious to hear constant disconnects with what I am reading on my screen.
>>285756614an awful lot of “official” “professional” translation projects are incredibly badly managed and the various translators get fed bits and pieces of stuff to translate, with no ability to check other versions, pre-existing content, or any of the background material. If they ask for reference material or memory data they get told “sorry that’s all the client gave us, work with what you got” and the result is this shit you see here.the contract gets filtered through multiple subcontractors and none of the middlemen are willing to go back up the chain. I would take an educated guess that in a lot of these cases the translator himself is even more pissed off by the shit quality of the end product than the player is.
