The anime also removed some of the edge like Makio calling Asa annoying and Asa throwing a hissy fit. Maybe they thought it might make them come off too unlikeable, but Asa's temper tantrum actually made me like her more. It makes her feel like more of a complete and real character. Plus, it's adorable.

Apologies for being a bit off-topic. I didn't read the chapter nor have I read any of the manga. I will eventually, but I dislike reading manga in English ever since learning Japanese and while I do plan on reading the manga, it'll be on my own time. I already get stressed out enough following as many seasonal as I do, keeping up manga alongside dumps on /a/ would be lethal. I just wanna post my thoughts on the most recent episode and don't feel like waiting for the next episode thread.Anyway I just got caught up with the most recent episode and watched the previous one a couple days ago. I'm still in a bit of shock off the last episode. It's unbelievable how real and full to life these characters are. Kasamachi's depression and Minori's, well, everything was handled so beautifully. I was a bit caught off guard with Asa assuming her mother's note was a lie, I'm still not sure why that was her first assumption, but she's also a teenager going through a lot so I can't blame her. She herself is now only truly realizing how little she knows her mom, and now can only go off what little she has that remains of her.I don't know if the show will ever give the full reasoning, but based off what the episode showed, my assumption is that Minori didn't truly want to have Asa. The way she interrogates herself, asking why she can't do this while pointing to herself pregnant, her crying with that expression as she "writes' the note, saying that her life didn't go as she thought it would, her constantly wanting to appeal normal, to be "a little bit better than normal" as a woman. While I'm sure the answer if presented would be beautiful, it works so well even now because Asa doesn't get to know either. She doesn't get to know if her mother's love was real, if she was a wanted pregnancy. It's brutal.
>>286187835I'm a bit of an emotional mess right now, not just from the impact of the previous episode but at my own stupidity, I put too much pride and self-esteem into learning Japanese and now anytime I'm even remotely confused by anything, I blame myself and get suicidally depressed so not perfectly understanding why Asa reacted as she did got me unreasonably upset. Either way I wanted to say with ep06, as I'm sure most anon's did it got me hopelessly romantic. Makio is probably the best "representation" of a person like me and like many anons and it taps into an internal jealous I've had of female versions of "me". Kasamachi's love of Makio is probably the most "unrealistic" thing of the show but I'd hardly consider it beyond that of abnormality, I think a lot of guys would go for Makio, I would too, and stuff like that always pains me in that I believe being a woman with these problems at the very least makes you more desirable than a man. Kasamachi kind of says it himself, albeit moreso about depression than anything neurodivergent related, but I think most people, especially fellow men silently judge and just expect you to get over it, to work harder on it. I think deep down I know if I was a woman, my life would probably be worse and I would have gotten raped a lot, but I still can't help but feel immense pain and sadness while watching the romance of this show. It's all just so incredible. I suppose Makio is a better catch than me by not being a depressed NEET, she has her problems but she's still pretty put-together.I doubt this show will be 3x3 for me, that's far too contentious of a spot, but 5x5 or something is very possible. I think the 20s have been pretty decent for anime and this is a standout. I'm sorry for being off-topic for the dump and for blogging as much as I have, this show does something to me. Instead, it was a "want" in the same way that she wanted to be average everywhere else, but the exact timing and male was inconvenient. Doing a browse of the Wikipedia article, it seems like abortions in Japan are a bit hard to get and expensive. So she might have been pretty stuck right then, even if an abortion hadn't been against her morals - I'm not going to try and guess what Minori's view on that would be. Because she was trapped with Asa and a vacuous 'husband', she basically went into coping mode and turned to Asa as the carrier of all the dreams and desires she herself never could live for. The love was real, but it was also basically psychologically necessary otherwise Minori would have fallen into a very deep depressive cycle over her life basically failing to match her expectations entirely with no way out that wouldn't mean sacrificing her world view. Like if she didn't love Asa, would Minori even have still been alive at 40? It is a very real and bitter life story for a woman who chased normalcy with neurotic focus and missed. At least it seems that she genuinely did love Asa and want the best for her, despite Minori's difficulties showing it sometimes. There was some light in her life through her daughter. Even if I think it was desperate.

Another thing that leads me to believe that Asa wasn't planned on, is after the cut of her listening to the other women talk about becoming moms and the one saying it feels like she finally became the woman she wanted to be, it cuts to Minori in the hospital room, sitting in the position as the pregnant one we see, facing us who would be in the position of the Minori antagonizing the pregnant one, as she talks about life not going as she thought it would.Just such a lovely show, there's so much to think about, inspect and rewatch. I think the love she had for Asa was real too, it's just so scary to think about when so much of her, including her very "marriage" was a lie. I'm honestly getting really emotional thinking about her, I'm very much a Makio, to a fault, and I just feel bad for any Minori'. Life isn't easy...

With some things just not working out for you and some periods in life that just rip you apart for no 'good reason'. Kasamachi's depression over working at the bank that didn't have an apparent source or cause but left him unable to move or go on, was another thing that got me. Just a guy whose own mind destroyed his life and he had to fight against to fix himself by taking a risk to jump careers to find something he could put up with again. And at the end, life just went on for him. Minori' wasn't a saint. And her struggle wasn't unique or the worst thing you could imagine. But you can just feel what it'd be like to realize that everything you'd wanted, even if it was banal and boring, is now almost forever unreachable before you even turned 30. That you ate shit and lost and now its just holding pace until you die. Another half century ahead of you that you know isn't going to be what you wanted, no matter how hard you tried. Her only solace was at least hoping she could raise Asa to be the woman she couldn't be. And even that failed due to bad luck. She'll never see her daughter as a woman living her life. Its heavy, you know?
