Why is this allowed? Why can't we go back to the days when one 1080p episode is like 300MB and well subbed and well optimized?

There is literally nothing wrong with VLC now, it's the encoders that need to adapt.

It still does pic related unless you use the nightly release, which is just a bloated mpv.
mpv and MPC-HC do not do pic related. They are objectively superior because they do not do pic related.
You are objectively retarded if you intentionally use a media player that does pic related when media players that do not do pic related exist.
You are also objectively retarded if you use what is essentially a bloated mpv.

VLC is designed and intended to be a stream player.
MPC-HC and mpv are designed and intended to play local videos.
Using VLC to play local videos is like using Adobe Audition as your mp3 player instead of Foobar or Audacious. You can do it, but it's retarded.

You could configure a superior media player like mpv to save screenshots with a specific level of compression.
Then again, wanting compressed screenshots is retarded because screenshots should be uncompressed so you can edit them and save as .jpg for posting on 4chan without compressing them twice like a retard.
Of COURSE you're retarded enough to want compressed screenshots. You use VLC.

Any faggot with a 20 year old chinkpad would be running mpv on a lightweight Linux distro and still be able to watch anime just fine. I was watching OZC, Bunnyhat, Beatrice, Encodergasm, etc. multi-gig full-grain episodes and movies on a fucking netbook back in the mid 2010s, the real culprit is that Michlan like many namefags is retarded.

>>286199842
>mfw downloading subs these days in 1080p is 1+GB each episode
Not unreasonable for BD releases, but it is trash seeing seasonal subsplease releases be so bloated
>not to mention they shit the floor when I use VLC
VLC has always been a meme solely because it uses more resources than MPC or mpv to do the same task. And as other anons pointed out it's had long documented cases of poor performance, which just doesn't happen with its alternatives
>Why is this allowed? Why can't we go back to the days when one 1080p episode is like 300MB and well subbed and well optimized?
Fast internet speeds and more powerful personal computing has lead to bloated filesizes in anything tech related because optimizing things to balance compression and quality is more involved than just using a generic preset for everything. Plus >>286200588. Also you're bitching about encoding for fucking seasonal shit, BD releases generally have enough groups putting out their own versions where you can pick what filesize/quality works for you.

>inb4 >vlc
>We live in 2025 now, it isn't bad anymore.
No, it still is. It's always just werkz'd but it's literally never been the best. I do respect that they've never fucked with a functional UI, but you genuinely should've fell for the meme and swapped to MPC or mpv years ago.

I don't like to build fonts cache either.
>>
>>286199842
100% the fault of shit and/or lazy encoders, more than once you can check an episode that is just 500mb big and compare it to the exact same episode but 3gb big, is the exact same shit.

You download 1gb episode to watch in the day of release, few months later when BD gets released and encoded you delete the old episodes and torrent the whole batch which are usually 300-600 mb (unless you prefer remuxes).

x265 enables the same quality in 300MB than a 1.4GB h264, but for some reason not a lot of encodecels use it, maybe out of fear the third world viewers can't play it
>>
>>286208607
regardless of how good the codec is, re-encoding lossy sources causes generational quality loss, like making a photocopy of a photocopy
I'll take remux'd crunchyroll streams any day over re-encodes
I also download untouched blurays whenever possible
only time I download encodes is for shit that was only available on DVD because deinterlacing is a nightmare in and of itself (GTO, Golden Boy, for instance)

use shaders or stuff to denoise, regrain etc. You are right but the size difference makes it too inefficient, an episode in AV1 or HEVC will look *just as good* for 1/5th of the size, I can't justify being a hardcore videophile for watching a torrented Singaporean cartoon that you don't physically own
>>
>>286208704
physical ownership is a meme when the discs are just digital files anyway
I have plenty of BDs I've bought myself and I literally can't watch them on PC because it requires a specific gen of intel CPU, so I'm forced to decrypt and rip them just to watch them anyway
also I have a 7x18TB NAS and a home theater setup that cost more than my car so I'll take all the bitrate I can get
side note, there's a special place in hell for people who label torrents as "remux" but re-encode audio to AAC
doubly so for people who re-encode AC3 audio
