Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the twenty-first volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.

MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.

Previous thread: >>286019531

I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ (despite my issues with it). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Per Furinkan: "There was no chapter of MAO in the previous week's issue of Shonen Sunday (2023 vol. 41)."

September 13th, 2023. Author's note:
"Q: Who is a manga character that you'd like to be friends with?
A: Chuu-san from Night Watch Cat (夜廻り猫/Yomawari Neko)."

>>286200514
Per Furinkan: "In the original Japanese, Sumiko is alternatively called "Sumiko" (澄子) and "Sumi-chan" (澄ちゃん) by Miwako."

Kandori is referred to as 寒鳥さん here.
>>
>>286200547
Nanoka's thought in the first panel was actually 看病… so it seems the way she drew the conclusion was different in Japanese.

Per Furinkan: ""Kandori is a student who is lodging in our western-style annex." - The term used here is "youkan" (洋館) a "western-style house". These would have been fairly uncommon during the 1920s."
>>
>>286200594
Another Furinkan note: ""He's the son of a rich family from the provinces." - The "provinces" is literally just that. "地方" (chiou), meaning "the provinces" or "the countryside" or "a rural area". This is not referring to the Empire's holdings in southern Sakhalin island (known as Karafuto (樺太庁)), and Korea (known as Chosen (朝鮮))."

Evening, OP. It was very nice of them to give Ayame a cover.
In other news, I managed to finish translating Amorphous Family. You can download it here: https://mega.nz/file/lEUgFQhZ#i2Ep7TvjxCvW0iVBd8VfxJvWecWyoiykVhV_lFcmtsA
Bit of a rollercoaster, this one. Sex, violence, drama and mystery! Let me know if you spot any errors.
>>
>>286200727
I googled around and actually found the art that Rumiko Takahashi was referencing on the matchbox here. I wasn't able to find a photo of a matchbox with it, but it is featured on the cover of a book called Matchbox Labels in Japan, which I'll post after the dump.
>>
>>286200830
Furinkan notes that: "There are many different types of paper talismen that have been used throughout the series, the one Mao uses here is a "fuda" (札). Previously we have seen a "gofu" (御符) and "reifu" (霊符)."

>>286200773
Oh, sick! Thanks a bunch. I'll read through it. I guess I'll post it in next week's thread then.

We have three color pages this time, because this is the 200th chapter! The cover is on the next page.

Per Furinkan: "The good luck charm given to Sumiko by Miwako is an "omamori" (お守り/charm or amulet). The small sack it is in is simply called a "fukuro" (袋), which means "sack" or "bag", it has no special terminology."

September 20th, 2023. Author's note:
"Q: What do you usually eat when you're hungry?
A: I'll pick up some sweets while I'm working."

VIZ had Yurako's line here as it was translated before and it made sense in that context, but in this context, maybe a more literal reading would be appropriate. The original line was 私は摩緒の事だけを思っている・・・
>>
>>286201422
End of chapter. Hehe, don't mess with that.
>>
>>286200875
they keep using talismen instead of talismans lol
>>
Original title was 子寄せの笛. I can see why VIZ went with something less direct.

September 27th, 2023. Author's note:
"Q: If you could cast a single spell only once, what kind of magic spell would you cast?
A: Tidying up magic."
>>
>>286201496
Uh oh. Right into it.

>>286201456
Oh hah. Furinkan has a few silly goofs here and there. I imagine their site doesn't even do a spellcheck given the typos I've seen. I like want to let them know, but it is so much and I don't know if they'd approve.
>>
>>286201533
Per Furinkan: "A panel of narration refers to "the capital". In the original Japanese it specifies "teito" (帝都) which literally means "the imperial capital". The Empire of Japan existed from 1868–1947 with the end of World War II. The imperial capital was Tokyo, just as in modern Japan. The title however also brings to mind 帝都物語/Teito Monogatari (known as Doomed Megalopolis in its English release), a story that has a great deal in common with the setting and themes of MAO which you can read more about in our culture notes."

And here's their note about it as it relates to MAO: "While Mao does not make specific reference to Doomed Megalopolis it touches on many of the same themes and time periods. The villainous Kato is descended from a rogue group of onmyodo (like Mao's group of onmyodo). Abe no Seimei is referenced as well as other historical figures. Aramata's series of novels are often cited as reviving interest in onmyodo which is now frequently a plot-device in many works of popular culture."

They also remark about the term "spirited away": "When Mao mentions the missing children he says they were "spirited away", this is quite literally the way the word is used in Japanese as well. "Kamikaku" (神隠), the word for "spirited away" or "mysteriously disappear" is written with the kanji for "kami/spirits" and "hide", meaning "hidden by kami/spirits". The concept in English and Japanese pairs well together and gives the same connotation."
>>
>>286201588
Oh and regarding the school, Furinkan notes that: "Jinjo Elementary School - the term "jinjo" (尋常) means "common" or "usual"."
>>
>>286201606
Per Furinkan: "In the original Japanese Mei addresses Shiranui as "Shiranui-sama", "Lord Shiranui"."
>>
>>286201588
it's 神隠し / kamikakushi
>>
>>286201443
Mao suddenly considering that maybe it would be better to come clean about meeting Yurako so that Nanoka doesn't find out herself and start getting funny ideas
>>
>>286201621
Oh, I checked and given the Japanese name of the thing, Mei did not bother asking what the flute did. But yeah, makes sense it was for slave merchants or human traffickers. Her line (from the previous page to the top panel here) was 不知火さまそれは・・・ 御降家にそういう呪具があったという事ですか?

Also, Furinkan says that: "Village hall - this is an assembly building or meeting hall in town. The Japanese term is 集会所 (shukaijo)."

End of chapter. How odd.

October 4th, 2023. Author's note:

Per Furinkan: ""I've heard there are certain frequencies, like mosquito alarms, that only young people can hear." - The "mosquito alarm" (モスキート音/mosukiito oto) is a high pitched sound that can only be heard by young people. The sound is a high-pitched buzz roughly about 16kHz-18kHz. Depending on your age you may or may not be able to hear it. ... Per Furinkan: "Baron Kawazu is introduced in this chapter. His name is written with kanji meaning "river harbor". ...
Titles such as "baron" were abolished after the American occupation of Japan following World War II when a new constitution was enacted in 1947. The peerage class was called "kazoku" ((華族) which was first established to replace the feudal daimyo in 1869. "Baron" (男爵/Danshaku) was the lowest of the five recognized ranks which included: Prince, the equivalent of a European Duke (公爵/Koshaku), Marquess (侯爵, Koshaku), Count, the equivalent of an Earl (伯爵/Hakushaku) and Viscount (子爵/Shishaku)."

""Living dolls" (生人形/iki ningyo) are actual things in Japan. They are lifesize dolls were developed during the late Edo period (the mid 1800s). Kisaburo Matsumoto (松本喜三郎) is thought to be the first to coin the name "living dolls" for his creations."

End of chapter, end of volume. Thanks anyone who read along, but also thanks anyone who reads it after. I completely understand. This one only came out in August last year in English so it is fresh on my brain. Maybe that's why it didn't grab me as much on my second read.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything MAO related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be dumping volume 22 on Thursday. I hope to see you there. In addition, I get to dump a Rumic one-shot! Thanks to the generous translation by an anon here, we have the 2017 Big Comic Original one-shot by Rumiko Takahashi available! So, I will dumping 不定形ファミリー or Amorphous Family in that thread!

earlier when mao said the charm became a "cursed artifact" it was 呪物 (jubutsu) in japanese >>286200983

i don't remember if 呪物 has come up before and what viz translated it as if it did, and i'm not sure if rumiko has even thought it through too much either... regardless, what's the difference between these two terms in-universe?
also, the other day i was wondering if new cursed tools could be made, after all things like that flute didn't materialize out of thin air right? and then there's how mao talked about exorcising the flute in this volume
if he can undo its cursed tool status, could he or someone else reapply it?

I doubt they'd have put spring on the obi if they were already planning to push it back. >Renji's lute technically qualifies as a cursed tool, I think.
just checked and hyakka does call it 呪具 (jugu) like with the goko clan tools
so then... couldn't shiranui and hakubi (moreso hakubi i guess) have recreated some tools during all this time? taking stuff back when they find them would still be on the table, but they could've had two of them instead of one
>>
>>286244600
Renji's lute only came about through very specific circumstances, so I'd assume that the same was the case for all the old Kou clan tools. Presumably something like Akanemaru had a gruesome origin story and couldn't just be recreated willy-nilly, or if it could, they might not have had access to that information anymore. We do see examples of them replicating old stuff they already have, namely Hakubi slapping a copy of the exorcising spear's talisman on his arm when he first fights Mao (though that's not really a tool as such), and I'd say his scarecrows qualify as a new "tool" altogether.
>>
>>286245430
i'm not suggesting they can be made willy-nilly, but they have had time to try, and they are apparently able to exorcise the original goko cursed tools
i don't know what the power difference between exorcising and creating a tool is, but you'd think it wouldn't be /that/ far apart ...right?
>or if it could, they might not have had access to that information anymore.
renji's such an elite hater he did it anyway and he doesn't know jackshit about onmyoji spells lmao
