Not the yami yami no mi. He can absorb, distribute and negate demonic powers ("akuma" is used to describe both fruits and Imu's demons). The fruit is connected to darkness just like Imu's "shadowy shape". Blackbeard likely chose the fruit to negate domi reversi.
Or maybe it's hito hito no mi, model: Davy Jones. Imu might be using the power of "that" man anyway (see: deep sea pact), so the similarities would still make sense.
