Pervy euphemisms and idioms are extremely common in titles for pervy manga. When you put sexpots on the cover with a potentially euphemistic title you're asking for trouble. You can call it a mental illness and I won't argue with you, but the website you're posting on is dominated by that particular disease.

If you're gonna share any examples, at least say what the original name is and what the accurate translation would be, guys.
Anyways, as mentioned already in this thread, Mato Seihei no Slave (Slave of Mato's Elite Soldiers) being changed to Chained Soldier is fucking stupid. Completely made up title aside, Yuuki is in no way a "soldier", he isn't officially part of the brigade and can't be because he's male.
In most of the world it's just called Demon Slave, which isn't that accurate but it's way better. The original Japanese version uses "Slave of the Hell Soldiers" which sounds nice, but it's also quite inaccurate and honestly not all that fitting.

it’s painful especially because the original title has such an ominous feel
“Doku” means poison and “Mori” means forest, but “dokudoku” means “gushing out in a copious stream” as in the way blood gushes from a slashed vein, and “morimori” means “heartily, energetically, enthusiastically”
the phrasing is cute but there is an implication of monstrous horror, which is a great fit for the manga if you know what happens
the official translated title is so fucking dumb, like orders of magnitude worse than the “poison poison forest forest” that the scanlators halfassed.
the title is impossible to translate accurately but come on, this is embarrassing. This is worse than Viz level.

Ruri means lapis lazuli in japanese, a jp person reading the title without context may not know immediately if the Ruri in the title refers to a person's name or the jewel itself and that change's the meaning of the title slightly.

That tiny bit of wordplay gets lost in translation since Ruri is 100% perceived as a japanese name (and translating it would have been retarded), so I guess they wanted to replicate the same nuance by moving the double meaning to the 2nd word on the title instead, thus "rocks".

What I'm saying is it's a lame pun but I get where they were coming from.

Fucking HORRENDOUS localized title for what is originally "Asper Kanojo"
The Japanese title has everything you need to know, it's a girl with aspergers. That's it.
The English title on the other hand is a fucking disaster, they had a perfect setup with "Asper Girl" but no, they went with a something that looks straight out of a fucking 80's American sitcom title "That's My Atypical Girl" like she's a little quirky, just a little unique not like the other girls, haha. I'm no expert, but the basics are that the English version is licensed by some English publisher
so it will be often up to them to suggest the English title, in the event that the Japanese owners don't have anything in mind
but the Japanese can demand something specific or overrule the suggestion, since they are they side holding the power in this agreement

If they really didn't want to keep the word slave, I feel like servant would've been a much better replacement. Servant of the Elite Soldiers is closer to the original (you can leave out the Mato part since without the kanji it doesn't tell you much) and fits better with the original title and what's shown in the manga.
>>
>>286233194
They probably do if they care enough, but the reality is that they are already entrusting the rest of the work to the localizer. Unless they are well versed in English (almost no nips are, certainly not your average mangaka) they are just going to say OK to whatever is suggested.
Also it seems like most of them don't give a shit about the foreign market to begin with outside of the money. They probably know its being butchered but they keep getting to write the story they want at least on the Japanese side if the sales are good enough so they'll approve a shit version if that is what it takes to not get axed.

I guess it's a classic but
>Ken - the great bearfist (or bearknuckle/bearfist)
At some point some dude in 80s Sweden called Pelle or something decided to sit down and go "hmm, it's about the great dipper, so ursa... bear! i'll call him bear fist, that'll be hip!"
The dub fucking sucks too, it's comically bad and not abridged-tier like the French one.

Also, the title english "Fist of the North Star" itself is kind of bad too because the North Star is Polaris which belongs to the Tentei/Heavenly Emperor in Hokuto no Ken, the actual "Fist of the North Star" in Hokuto no Ken is fucking Gento Koken which protects the Heavenly Emperor and belongs to Falco, not Kenshiro. Ideally the franchise should've been relocalized to "Fist of the North Stars" to refer to the constellations or "Fist of the Great Dipper" or a multitude of other titles that make more sense.

This one is a strange choice. Trying to make an inoffensive name for a manga which contains a fairly honest potrayal of disability seems unnecessary. I guess they were trying to avoid some sort of uproar (from people that won't even read the manga), but I think they were being too careful.
The other examples ITT seem mostly fine to me tbdesu. I don't really mind the title being changed into something a bit more 'selling', especially the ones that are difficult to translate, as long as the content itself is translated faithfully. Hopefully the liberties taken in the title don't reflect the TL as a whole.

Whenever I hear that series mentioned by someone irl they just say "Dungeon Meshi", I think with popular series that get a lot of hype beforehand, just keeping the Japanese title works fine as long as it's fairly short and easy to remember. Like Jujutsu Kaisen and InuYasha.

I think you can't judge the ones with english on the Japanese volumes, Delicious in Dungeon, and Attack on titan are done deals and the same amount of people would be arguing on they they didn't keep the author's intended english name.
In general I think Japan's and anime's slice of pop culture has grown so we as an industry can trust the viewer with more non-translated titles. Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most popular anime ever and that name is entirely foreign.
>>
>>286243953

Tengoku Daimakyou into Heavenly Delusion is even worse than Attack on Titan imo, since Daimakyou has much more meaning than simply "Delusion" while Attack on Titan is just a simple, poor translation. It's even worse considering how daimakyou was used in the context of one of the recent chapters. Heavenly Delusion sounds cool at least though.

I mean something like "The Pointy Hat Atelier" would be right at least. The most glaring issue with them changing it to witch hat is that now the retarded localizers are just using witch in place of a word that will be said like a hundred times during the show at least and would be better translated as mage.
Locamalizing mahoutsukai to witch is only reasonable if the character is a girl, but they are literally localizing it to make everyone a witch which is very blatantly well beyond the scope of what they should be doing even under their own bullshit localization job. Not that I really approve of localization in the first place but this is still the kind of shit that will actually create retarded drama that extends beyond the content of the show.

>>
>>286250848
The mangaka has the term "witch hat" on the cover of the Japanese version of the manga, so the relation is clearly intended. The term majo isn't used specifically because it has the kanji for woman in it and there are males. You could say the term witch being primarily used for women in English is similar but witch is sometimes used for men as well, and there's the term witch doctor too.
>>
>>286245452
"Conan" is a normal real name used by actual people irl, I find it hard to believe that Conan the Barbarian's trademark somehow meant no other works could ever have the name Conan in their title, especially when it's a work with zero similarities. If they made a case out of that there's no way it would hold up in court.

Mandated english titles do not count, saying the relation is intended is beyond retarded, they will put literally whatever there just look at any other japanese title. If your going to die on that hill though then whatever, like I said if they just made the title that its fine. To bad sloppalizers only seem to argue like this whenever its convenient, but for something like picrel they will never utter a word(though obviously this english title is just as shit for likely the same reason because nips can never dekiru english).
Using it as an excuse to localize magic user or mage to witch is still retarded and dying on THAT hill and trying to justify it just makes you an unbelievable faggot.
>>
Sometimes it's inevitable like "The Hungry Succubus Wants to Make Him Come" becoming "Wants to Consume Him"
>>
>>286251272
It's still a trademark that covers comics, it's not worth risking a lawsuit and it's not worth -not- filing a lawsuit either. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
>>
>>286251467
I'm not dying on any hill. The term mahoutsukai is vague as fuck and I've seen it translated as literally every term for a magic user that exists. And the fact that you think calling males witches will lead to "retarded drama that extends beyond the content of the show", as if that isn't already the case anyway, is retarded.

If I was into Mahou shoujo ni akogarete I maybe would have more of an opinion on the localized title. Gushing over Magical Girls is obviously another instance of trying to shove alliteration into the localized title. Looking Up to Magical Girls seems better to me. And I know you're bringing it up because you think I would say you should keep the English title the mangaka came up with, but I hope you realize the difference between your example and Witch Hat Atelier.

Yes but since they can no longer say the name from fear of backlash, every appearance in the Disney canon has awkward cringey lines like "I need to retrieve my Firespray Class Gunship" and similar. It's like in RPGs that let you name the protagonist despite all the dialogue being voiced, so no character is ever allowed to refer to the main character by name no matter how stilted and fake it sounds.

however it might seem true logically, in practice that's clearly incorrect, since everyone calls it Dungeon Meshi anyway

maybe it's the cadence, maybe it's better to have it begin with dungeon, maybe everyone has already accepted the original

>>286244350
>But then you don't get the "D in D" wordplay.
why is everyone so adamant to make a DnD reference?
the manga has completely nothing to do with DnD
there's zero overlap either linguistically, tonally, or mechanically
it just happens to be in a dungeon and to have a dragon
if anything the title should reference Wizardry, although that still would have been a bad idea
shoving a distinctly western association into the title is exactly the sort of forced, marketing-driven localization that otherwise gets lambasted by anons, so why does it get a pass here?
