This was the first long manga I read while learning Japanese; maybe not really the most beginner-friendly choice, but great for learning interesting idioms like 腑に落ちない. I've never seen anyone else make this claim, and I have no actual proof, but I am convinced based on timing and content that Tanpopo Suisha, the song Kawai Eri composed for the Sketchbook picture special, is a reflection on her own impending death from cancer.The song is filled with images of mortality, from the cherry blossom serving as a hairpin to the distant sight of the train moving through the twilit town to the looming evening shadows, and the narrator's journey is clearly alone, away from her friends and into the unknown, accompanied only by the dandelion waterwheel they made together. And yet Kawai suffuses the whole song with a sense of profound gratitude: death isn't scary or lonely, because she has the legacy of those who stayed with her in life to carry her through it.At the same time, that ending is a real gut punch: the song concludes as if it's starting a new verse, and Kawai promises to tell us all about the cool new thing she saw "tomorrow."
