I got around to the Idol movie. It was okay, better than the show in having something to say but my dislike of idol culture and my ambivalence to Idol precure itself didn't do me much favours in my enjoyment of it. It's central theme being about how different things have different lifespans is touching but feels off when connected to an Idol plot. They compare it to pets when the Wonderfuls show up, but unlike animals who just have a naturally different lifespans, idols are just humans. The main reason idol careers are short is largely due to the toxic culture. Even in the movie, Utako chooses to die alone and old on some inhabited island just to avoid aging around others. It's treated like an unavoidable tragedy which just rubbed me the wrong way despite liking the theme itself. I was happy when the Hero Girls and the Wanadfurus showed up, the Idols singing different OPs was a fun fanservice and it was overall a pretty movie but I didn't care for it much more than I already don't care for the series.

I think the commercial cut being the Cures solving the mystery which gives time for the kids watching to solve it themselves and think is really cute. The only thing I don't care for at the moment is that Anna is a pretty boring protag but we're now only just getting out of exposition dumps so hopefully she gets more character stuff to do, I'm sure she will.

In both a figurative and literal reading of it, it comes off mean and just sad, and it's presented just as an unavoidable tragedy.
