Imagine if there was an actual magic system and characters had to use powders or ingredients, or at least... something? I've read through Golden Land again. I must say, Macht's utter obliviousness would be very funny, if not for all the body count at the beginning and his own tragedy at the end. And ends saying that he still cannot feel any shred of guilt, after he spent a third of the chapter berating himself for trying to run away on instinct, instead of calmly accepting death he now thinks he deserves.
