If the source material is shit, the anime will be shit with a safe, generic adaption. This is one of the rare cases where the adaption is a massive improvement. I do understand why a large portion of nips hate it. When it comes to media, they like the same thing repeated over and over again. Subtlety is also disliked. Everything needs to be explained. There were nips that were annoyed that gaijins didn't like JJK's explanation episode. I also understand why some other people dislike it (tiktok brains). Of course there are also people who consider things like plot or action to be of higher importance than some other elements. This can be a case of not knowing how to watch a show, though it can also be just personal preference. If you are able to enjoy the elements that have been done well, you'll enjoy a larger variety of content. The adaption excels in atmosphere, tension, sound design, something very few anime do, even those that should attempt to get them right (see: pretty much every horror anime). I imagine this is the kind of death game slop some people would've preferred.

I wish we had more of the manga in the anime, but both these adaptations were created concurrently, so I can understand why it happened.The LN is the best at depicting the MC's pov and inner thoughs. For example, it goes into more detail about how she is thirsting for the other girls in each game. It also really shows how messed up her thoughts are compared to her actions. The adaptations remind me of what they did for Youjo Senki. Each one is distinctly different from each other while bringing something new to the story.
