Not only did he actually lose consciousness, but there were no less than 3 times that both his opponent and the spectators thought he was dead. Of the ~82 attacks thrown by Shou, 61 landed clean. Of the 31 Kenichi threw, 14 landed (and 8 of those were while he was unconscious).

After finishing my re-read I noticed that Akisame is the only Master we never got a real backstory flashback for, all we got was hints because he said he was bullied as a kid. Even with Kensei we got a little with his brother. Hopefully we get to see it in the sequel.
