It's when "one too many" characters joins the party, that's when things jump the shark. It's a sign of laziness ie. "we can't do anything more with these existing characters, we NEED someone new!". It could theoretically work, but either the entire demon plot would have to be rewritten to accommodate it, or Aura would have to appear much later in the story with a whole arc justifying why Frieren would tolerate her.

Change 2. Change Aura's [Scale of Obedience] so its destruction would mean the death of the soldiers Aura used to control + Scale of Obedience is a part of Aura so Aura herself can't be killed.In this scenario, Aura can't be killed for a similar reason as to why Macht couldn't be killed (El Dorado's citizens). Frieren's choices would be: A) Kill Aura and let the soldiers die. B) Dispell Aura's link to the soldiers which would take uncertain amount of time. C) Wait for all of Aura's subjects to live out their lives before killing Aura. The choice is C while working on B.Frieren can't just leave Aura, due to Aura attracting other demons (7 sages), Frieren will keep Aura around in simple disguise so non-important characters won't notice she's a demon and only occassionaly important characters might notice and the story can have more Aura centric moments in that case. Frieren will still kill Aura in the end so Frieren's hatred for demons don't have to be cut, but this still dampens it a lot. Obvious effect of this change will be the mere exposure of demons for the viewers and Stark and Fern, Aura will be around constantly and she has great charisma. But this can still play into the established demon lore by making Aura act docile until she gets the chance to make a mess even while obeying Frieren's orders. There could potentially be a Sukuna taking over Megumin's body while obeying his vow with Itadori kind of moment later on. Overall, don't really like this change. Aura has too much charisma. If done I would prefer Aura getting killed off after some arcs, maybe it could work if it served as a lesson for Fern and Stark exactly what a demon is (big version of the Himmel killing demon girl). Otherwise demons will stop being demons and become just another race of humans.

The impulse to attack and destroy sapient creatures not made of mana is too persistent and insidious.Forcing Aura to join the party once she's enslaved by her own magic would be an extremely cruel act. First, she would be unable to satisfy that impulse forever. And then she would have to live with the fact that she was bested at her own game, her own magic used to trample on her. As magic is the thing demons truly love and value, that would be the most extreme humiliation imaginable. For fuck's sake, Aura herself thought that death would be better

>>286644714This illustration is just amazing. Together like this Aura's design complements Frieren's so perfectly. Design-wise she's the perfect Vegeta to her Goku. But Frieren as a story HAS to avoid humanizing the demons at all costs. If in-universe, and to the readers, the demons start seeming like humans, redeemable, and pitiable, then the positive images of Frieren and Himmel will get ruined. Frieren is known to be a mage who's slayed the most amount of demons out of any of them. Himmel slayed the demon king and presumably many other demons. If the demons stop being pure evil that costs 0 morality to kill, then Himmel's pure, angelic, uncomplicated good image gets tarnished. Frieren's earlier remarks about demons become racist justifications for murder, and at worst she becomes a genocidal maniac. So the story has to keep the demons as demons, pure evil monsters with no moral complications.BUT the story/writer just can't help but make their demons beautiful, cool, charming, compelling and fun to read. Even cute like Linie. You could even empathize with Lugner's hatred for geniuses. Macht most of all is one of the best characters in the series. And yet the story has to constantly remind the reader "Remember, all of these positive traits they exhibit are all lies, all of the positive feelings you feel towards them are you just being tricked by them. You should hate them and be glad that they're killed." If the story wanted uncomplicated evil then the demons simply could've been non-verbal non-humanoid ugly monsters. But it would be much less enjoyable, so it's stuck like this.To the average nipponjin they don't really think much about races, and the xenophobic view of non-humans all being pure evil is simple, acceptable, and don't have to think much on it.
