I typically agree that the industry is on a decline and think this will only become worse as time goes on, since it's stop being a niche industry with extremely focused and obsessive creators to a industry catering specifically to normalfag central and promoting the worst kind of careerists who focus on volume output rather than quality.Having said that, the industry isn't dead. There are unironic masterpieces still being produced. Some of my favourite anime of all times have released in the past 10 years and I know that there are still talented creators doing incredible work right now.As for the fandom, you need to filter out the normals, they don't have sufficient exposure to the medium and their opinions are less than garbage. If you have a close group of friends who have shared your hobby for many years, you will understand that the fandom is still alive and well. As for Twitter et al, there's nothing of value to be found. Even /a/ is struggling to produce interesting discussions, everyone is more interested in finding the next big watchalongs with /a/, the so-called "board events". Having said that, threads for niche shows are still capable of producing decent discussion, unfortunately you have to filter out the big name anime.

No one can really love anime and manga without loving the Japanese to at least some extent, their cultural output cannot be divorced from their national identity. But that doesn't mean they are impossible to criticise, they have significant blind spots and most can't even acknowledge or even comprehend how deeply fucked up some aspects of their society is. But again, that doesn't mean that we don't love them. It is simply the case that all nations are imperfect, even if the Japanese are probably some of the best people around.

I also find their history with Christianity to be utterly incomprehensible and is something that really infuriates me; probably as a direct consequence of this, their writing more often than not typically fails to capture anything that is actually elevated or meaningful, as they've been circling down the nihilism drain for many decades now. Again, probably some of the best people around, they are very polite, respectful and respectable people that created by their own merit one of the cleanest and most beautiful nation in the entire world. But they are far from being unimpeachable, there is much to criticise about Japan. So while I can't condone it, I can understand why some would feel "superior" to the Japanese, though that is just another classic example of casting stones when you own a glass house.
