It's just that the recent trends of isekai and video game fantasy and the most egregious, lazy and painfully obvious. I still think MiA would still stand out in any era of fantasy, even back in the 80s when you had OVAs competing to be the most gory/edgy. There's a lot more going for it than just the shock value.
