He didnt really earn any of the dreams or happiness he achieved after dying to the zombies and merging with chainsaw man. Everything he got after that point was either because of chainsaw man's reputation prior to meeting denji or because of the powers chainsaw man bestowed on him.He didn't even really learn to be a good fighter, he mostly just abused his regenerative abilities. Which allowed him to constantly make mistakes and not learn from them, because the stakes never existed for him personally, only for those around him. But he quickly moved on from those deaths too.If there is a part 3, my hope is that he remembers the mistakes he made when he was merged with pochita and now has no regenerative powers and is fully mortal, like koshibe. And he rises to the challenge of surviving without chainsaw man powers. That is the only path forward that makes part 2 not become a complete waste of time.

The audience reaction to Denji stagnating and refusing to grow is much the same as to Shinji pushing people away and refusing to get in the robot.
