Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the twenty-fourth volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.

MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.

Previous thread: >>286524121

I will be using the official localization of the manga by VIZ (despite my issues with it), though we are now getting into chapters from volumes that have not yet been collected in English (hence the Japanese cover being used for the image here). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

I still think given the combination of these two, this is a panacea that should realistically be put to use rather than simply used to cure the evils of the seed of haku. Like, they should be used together and cure every illness and injury. I get Kamon isn't really about that, but still... Maybe it is "too risky" or something, but there's plenty of people who would end up dead anyway.

Surely it would be fine to get it removed now, right? I'm a little confused by Mei's line in panel 2. It might point to some of her power being tied to having the seed in her but I can't be sure if that's a mistranslation or intended. The original Japanese for it was 私の命を魄の種てつないて力を与えてくださった不知火さまを、

Per Furinkan: "When Mao comments that the Goko Clan once made salves to for noblewomen we see two Heian era women being shown. The reader knows they are from the Heian period due to their distinctive eyebrows. These are called "hikimayu" (引眉). Women at the time plucked their natural eyebrows and re-drew them much higher on their foreheads in a smudge-like fashion."

Googling it produced some odd images, as Heian era women also blackened their teeth. Certainly, these chibi manga women look a bit cuter than how the ensemble looked in real life.

Furinkan discusses at length the comments and results of the 95th Newcomer Awards that Rumiko Takahashi was one of the judges on. I may post some stuff regarding it after the dump.

Furinkan also mentions that: "MAO will not appear next week, it will return in Shonen Sunday 2024 Vol. 31." So, there'll be a gap in the dates.

June 12th, 2024. Author's note:
"Q: Which manga character would you like to have as your younger brother or sister?
A: Zhuge Liang from Sangokushi."
Furinkan's note: "Zhuge Liang, also known as "Kongming", is an actual historical figure, but Rumiko Takahashi cites his appearance in Mitsuteru Yokoyama's 1971-1987 Sangokushi (三国志). Takahashi wrote a tribute to author Mitsuteru Yokoyama upon his death in 2004."

Anyway, now we get to talk about this. Furinkan notes that: "Bronze mirrors (銅鏡/doukyou) are highly polished bronze on one side and often cast with a relief pattern on the back. Some "Chinese magic mirrors" have the ability to project the relief sculpture on the reverse side when sunlight is shone on their polished side. In Japanese, these magic mirrors are known as "makyou" (魔鏡)."

Nanoka's line was actually pretty directly translated. She did not use the term makyou.

Per Furinkan: "Rumiko Takahashi, along with Gosho Aoyama, Mitsuru Adachi and Kenjiro Hata, was one of the judges of the 94th Newcomer Awards who's results are published in this issue. The three winning series were: Call for UFO (コール・フォー・ユーエフオー) by Kashio Deshi (出路かし魚), Erica (エリカ) by Minamikawa (南川) and Yuki no Unko (雪のうんこ) by Dan Sakamoto (坂本暖). The three honorable mention winners were: Sarima no Mahou no Fuku (サリムの魔法の服) by Kitsuki (きつき), Tori no Mei (鳥の眼) by Kazuki Hayama (葉山一樹) and Gou (轟) by Jose Shirota (白田ジョゼ).
Takahashi's comments on Erica were, "It was extremely interesting. The heroine's setting is exciting. I wish the imagery had been made more readable by eliminating unnecessary lines, but I was able to get absorbed in reading it from the middle. On the other hand, if the first panel's too sloppy, you may not be able to read it, so be careful."
Regarding Yuki no Unko, Takahashi stated, "It's a casual story, but the detailed characters and descriptions are good. I think the scenery is also used effectively. In the future, please create a main character who can lead the series.""

Feels a bit odd posting this given that I haven't read these series, but maybe it'll give some insight into her writing style.

We've seen Daigo wipe out Yurako's ayakashi before, but this page really vividly demonstrates the difference in their strenghts
>>286693387
This whole sequence is great. Even though Yurako's objectively done some prety bad things, you still feel sorry for her because of how utterly the situation is out of her control. The shaking, the choke marks on her throat, the way she asks for Mao to save her at the end... Perfectly done to really drive home how powerless she truly is. And the rapey undertones add an interesting contrast to the way Daigo treats the "unpure" Yurako as opposed to how he romanced the "pure" Sana.
>>
>>286697910
Gotta strike while the iron is hot (or at least lukewarm)
I wonder if the scar on his eye is deliberately meant to look like tears. Same with Mao, although in Mao's case I'm almost sure it was deliberate, particularly in the couple flashbacks he has to Sana's death.

Would Mao and Inuyasha be compatible enough to exist in the same universe, or are the ways they both handle yōkai/demons and magic too fundamentally different?

She told them what Yurako told her, but Mao was clearly too thick to notice the romantic implications, and Natsuno probably only heard the cliff-notes version later. She did have that conversation with Nanoka about her liking Mao when they met Yurako later, so maybe she put two and two together.
