Only after I became a player that I realized that all the characters in the original YGO sucked at the game. Their common strategy is to build up a single high stat monster that would die to a simple spell card. Like what is the point of combine 3 BEWDs when they're already the strongest cards in the game statwise? You would just make it more easier to kill.
Bakura is a super funny villain exactly because he's the mastermind big bad of the series but he isn't actually that great at the game. He's constantly taking L's, and the only reason he's relevant is because of his op ability to put pieces of his soul into things, so that no matter how many times he's defeated he just keeps coming back immediately. Most of the Yu-Gi-Oh! antagonists are characterized by being "heels" more than actual duelists.Pegasus only seems like a threat because he could read minds and cheat during his duels. Marik also spent most of his time getting stomped in the card game. He lost his Osiris to Yugi before the finals, lost in the duel to determine the roster, and he would have lost to both Mai and Jonouchi in terms of game mechanics. He only won those duels due to shadow game shenanigans. His strategy is much more about torturing and inflicting pain and trauma on the opponent to kill them or make them lose consciousness with his dark powers than it is actually being skilled at the game or playing a good deck.The villains aren't sweaty meta-gamers who try to play the most consistent decks, they're heels who cheat and use torture to try to get ahead.
