The thing I noticed about Fujimoto, in both Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch, is that he is extremely good at getting your attention with something edgy right at the beginning. Gore, shocking violence, sentimentality toward children, or emotional attachment to parental figures. These are cheap ways to pull at the heartstrings, often followed by something gruesome, gory, or sexual. It works as an attention getter.Then he strings things along. He introduces many characters and plot lines in a chaotic way. But nothing resolves in a satisfying manner. His setups rarely have meaningful payoffs, and when things conclude it is usually abrupt, sometimes meta, sometimes avant-garde. It comes across as pretentious because all the attention grabbing never leads to a deeper or meaningful story.Fujimoto is very good at hooking the reader and keeping pages turning, but he never justifies the original premise that got your attention in the first place. The attention getter is never substantiated with a story that actually resolves its setups.That is why I hate his work. Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man are exactly this problem. They are all attention getter and no substance. The abrupt or confusing endings feel like they are trying to pass themselves off as profound or avant-garde, as if an empty conclusion is supposed to mean something.It reads like a student film that mistakes chaos and shock for depth. The stories rely on gore and emotional cheap shots, but they never culminate in anything meaningful.Ironically, I am glad Fujimoto exists. He is the textbook example of someone who is excellent at grabbing attention, pacing scenes, and using visual gags to keep readers interested, yet fundamentally has nothing to say. He cannot write coherent arcs. Characters like Aki, Makima, Reze, Kobeni, and Power all end up as aborted arcs. Fujimoto is great at getting attention, but terrible at writing stories with substance.
