Life expectancy is calculated based on the amount of healthy old people around and when all the younger generations are essentially propping these people up then it makes more sense. Not to mention food was healthier, there wasn't chemicals in everything, the work environment while stressful wasn't nearly as bad as time (stress can cause health issues to accumulate over time).
