Kit just didn't love Catherine is all and probably wasn't falling in love with her due to it feeling like an obligation. Lily and Kit both had paint autism and he never connected with Catherine the entire time they were together even through childhood. I think Kit falled hard for Lily because she was an amazing painter and didn't care for Kit's upbringing.
