Merkatz didnt care for politics much beyond an abstract sense of honor. He fled to the FPA mostly to save his subordinates' asses and stayed there just because he was good at his job. When youre good at your job you like doing it and want to continue doing it. When things got smoothed over he didnt want to just switch sides again because thats a bad look and he didn't really care enough either.I think you're misreading him.
