Don't worry, the anime director had your back because as far as I remember the anime has a much happier vibe than the manga. They are both their own experience.

Yeah, because half the struggle is finding a decent rip and the other half is emotionally surviving it. Oldheads weren’t gatekeeping this show, we were issuing a warning.

I've always gotten more emotion out of anime for more reasons. Also I don't read much manga but this one in particular. It was a good soul cleanse for sure.
>>
>>286883750
I don't think you could get away with a series like Binchou-tan in the Reiwa Era. The level of melancholy it presents was doable in the early 00s when there was still the hope and optimism of turn the millennium within the audience to fall back upon. We live in a dimmer and darker age now, so this level of struggle isn't as easy to receive even in an incredibly moe package (which is part of why cheat/slow-life isekai are so popular imo as a form of escapism IMO).

Anyway Binchou-tan's use of bird and duck taxis is a ridiculously cute image.
>>
>>286884845
I think you make a good observation with the isekai. That kind of on the nose escapism would've been considered embarrassingly indulgent in the 00s.

>She sure eats a lot of rice
https://www.japanvillage.jp/diary-detail/664
>In Japanese cuisine, Binchotan is often used to improve the quality of cooked rice. Adding a piece of Binchotan to the rice cooker or pot during the cooking process helps to purify the water and release minerals, resulting in fluffier and more flavorful rice. The Binchotan also helps to balance the pH levels of the water, contributing to better texture and taste.

>>
What bugs me is that she's friends with local ojou-sama Kunugi-tan who's barely larger than a stag beetle but lives in a giant fancy mansion. It wouldn't have hurt to let be a live-in made there. At least she wouldn't have to worry about being woken up during rainstorms by leaks in the roof or dying in a ceiling collapse when a strong gust of wind blows in.
>>
>>286915794
It's made clear in the anime and manga that Binchou lives in the old run down house because she wants to. There are people willing to adopt her but she still wants to live in the mountains where she lived with Grandma.
It is more touching that way instead of a basic sob story.

Just know that the sweet potato you see in anime/manga prepared like that is Superior Japanese Sweet Potato (Satsumaimo) different from the ones you normally get at the grocery store in the West:
https://web-japan.org/kidsweb/archives/news/04-02/yakiimo.html
https://www.chowhound.com/1654021/american-vs-japanese-sweet-potatoes-difference/
>One big difference in Japanese sweet potatoes is the texture; American sweet potatoes have a 77% moisture content, making them pretty wet, while Japanese ones are drier, with a moisture content around 70%. In practical terms, this results in the Japanese variety having a much fluffier texture, closer to that of a regular potato, than "regular" sweet potatoes, which have a texture similar to a pumpkin. Japanese sweet potatoes are also very dense inside, so the cooking process may take a bit more time. Unlike other sweet potatoes, though, they aren't likely to get soggy or overly wet during the cooking process. The flavor of Japanese sweet potatoes is a sweet one (hence the name), often said to be sweeter than a regular orange sweet potato. At the same time, some describe the taste as being nutty, close to that of a chestnut; in Japan, these sweet potatoes are even touted as a special fall flavor

Looks like this calls for an adventure to Japan to find the finest, bestest satsumaimo there is in order to plant them back home and become the sweet potato king with his superior nipponese potatoes.

>My Roommate Is a Cat aka Dōkyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue "My Housemate Is on My Lap, But Sometimes, on My Head"
On the surface it's mostly a cute series about an man introverted young writer who finds a stray kitten and takes her in, but from her POV he needs help so she "raises" him. Getting into the backstory of her past with some of the flashbacks about broke me.

>>
alright, you guys convinced me, I'll watch it.
>>
>>286988320
Same. I put it on thinking it’d just be another moe blob iyashikei and then it just quietly kneecapped me. There’s something about how understated it is - no big melodrama, just this tiny charcoal girl doing her best and finding little bits of warmth wherever she can.

The OST is insanely good for that too. It’s so simple and soft but it sticks with you. That lonely winter morning vibe hits different when you’re commuting half-asleep, watching salarymen shuffle around. Makes you feel weirdly okay about everything.

Binchou-tan really is up there with Aria in that “gentle but devastating” tier. It doesn’t fix you, it just sits with you for a while.
>>

I'm convinced, downloading it now. The OST too. I'm guessing like Aria it's one of those series you'll appreciate more if you don't just binge your way through it.
>>
you have regular charcoalor black charcoal, it's pyrolysed wood/biomass.
Basicaly you cook it and off all the expelled syngasses with the heat but do this within an oxygen free environment to avoid burning up the mass.
For Binchoutan or white charcoal. they traditionally used a very dense type of oak managed through rotational coppice but nowadays are more varied. The more important part is after the charcoal is made they open up the air vents and get it glowing brightly at a high temperature which makes the charcoal like a pottery kiln and vitrifies the charcoal into a much harder more inert state. you can literally make windchimes out of it because they ring, or even a sortof xylophone

by doing this they make the white charcoal burn much more consistently than black charcoal making it produce a slightly lower but much more stable consistent heat better suited to cooking. typically the unburned binchoutan is put into a snuffing pot that excludes air and allows it to be reused

On a side note, what other "-tan" animanga there exist? I've read/watched long ago Moetan, Habanero-tan and Afghanis-tan (picrel). Last one being one of favourites of this "moe genre". Might read them again.

Then what are you doing on /a/ clicking raw scans, you masochist.

Half the fun is squinting at the moonrunes and pretending you understand through context and vibes alone. Just look at Binchou-tan’s little :3 face and you’ll get 90% of the plot anyway.

Worst case, wait two years for some saint to dump a half-finished scanlation and argue about translation notes. That’s the true anime experience.

I would term the anime to have an implied happy ending as she gains numerous friends that find out how she'd been living and I cannot imagine they would leave her alone given what happens at the end from then on.

Well the reality is they do burn some more of it to ash but they need to generate heat to vitrify the normal charcoal into binchoutan charcoal, they're literally reaching pottery kiln temperatures to achieve this.
Technically you can make charcoal with a retort using an external heat source and a vent hole to drive off the wood gasses with, it produces a slightly different end product. Industrially there are all sorts of products derived from the driven off gasses I think they're called wood vinegar or something and then the different levels of output charcoal like torrefied or biochar.
Here's a cody's lab video about charcoal science.

The timing, control of temperature and the rate of burn is really where the artistry of charcoal making and Binchoutan requires even more care since there's even less by the end of it.

I see, so it's a trade off between more material and a superior product.
>they're literally reaching pottery kiln temperatures

Well you know Bobby, sometimes it's nice to remind ourselves of how blessed we are in America to have access to an abundance of superior propane fuels and propane accessories to make living easier. Some poor souls a world away are forced to toil using inferior heating mediums, and make up the difference with only determination and hard work. Always remain humble son...
