I've also still been reading through Last news >>286867315 this pic is from there. I don't think it was ever TL'd but i'm 4 volumes in now and it reminds me a lot of "The Newsroom" for the type of format.
>>
>>286867525
the team that did last news went on to do a more political one that i want to read next.

>加治隆介の議
>Kaji Ryūsuke, a son of a famous Japanese politician, undergoes the hardship of becoming a Member of the Diet after claiming a mandate as his father's heir - in ultra-conservative Kagoshima Prefecture.

>I couldn't finish either despite liking the base idea for it. I didn't like it as much for other reasons
Is it because it's kind of low stakes? It threatens war while mostly being small scale skirmishes and such. I'm sure it will escalate but as is I don't find the mecha fights engaging. Its almost like it would have been better as some odd turn-of-the-20th century steampunk thing instead of Gundam
>>
>>286868225
Yeah and Clark Ken is obviously Superman. It’s called suspension of disbelief.
>>
>>286868818
I kind of expected it be a return to primitive humans, without higher level tech. Just similar to 50-80s tech. Where their timeline was set in the future from a collapse and rebuild, I did get a part of that but it's not the way i expected. I liked lorhan's way of exploring mech and how it can be used for non combative roles but i would have liked to see more of a patlabor take on the mech rather than the same old mech vs mech battles. obviously I didn't finish it but it would have far more interesting inventing unique uses for older mech. The zaku? it has tubes everywhere maybe the older generation meant for it to be an incubator or water holding system. In even 70 years in our timeline we've lost a lost of tech and know how. we know how they might have been used but not the progress in building in them. a timeline that has moved past large scale wars and low population numbers will eventually lose that knowledge as well.

I started Sailor Moon S. It's much better than R so far, both in terms of scene-to-scene direction (R has a lot of mediocre storyboarding) and writing. They clearly know what to do with Venus too, which is great.
As for manga, I'm 8 volumes in to 3x3 Eyes. The scan and translation quality vary between "professional" and "almost unreadable", but it's really good nonetheless. The action is creative but the slice of life parts are where it's really at.

Looks like watercolor and gouache. Watercolors are tricky to work with, you're more likely to see them used in illustrations (like the Lupin pic) or in single panel cartoons rather than fully colored sequential comics.
>>
>>286883337
It's not the watercolor but rather the base inking style. A lot of comics from the 70s to 80s have that almost blur like quality to their inking regardless of they are b&w or with watercolors/gauche. I see sometimes in fanart but the style itself isn't used in favor of crisper lines from pen nibs. I don't believe it's all brush work either as it was uncommon enough to get pointed out as unusual
>>
>>286882531
You’re in for 80s OVA energy distilled into a single, gorgeous art film that refuses to explain itself.

FSS the movie is basically a lavish tone piece for Nagano’s setting. Insane mechanical designs, ethereal elf-girl vibes, aristocrats being dramatic as fuck, and lore being name-dropped like you already read 12 volumes. Don’t expect a clean beginning-middle-end narrative. It’s more like “here’s a slice of a gigantic mythos, good luck.”

The real selling point is the mecha animation and that shimmering, soft 80s cel aesthetic. Mortar Headds look regal as hell in motion. The soundtrack slaps too.

If you go in expecting a self-contained story, you might feel lost. If you go in to vibe with space feudalism and og mechanical porn, you’ll have a good time.

It's a series with many hooks and potential pitfalls, and depends on your tastes. One of it's strongest charm point is that it's very unique in how it handles its main premise of "cultural victory", which most of its successors and other series with similar premises fail to capture; even its direct sequel/in-universe reinterpretation DYRL misses many of the curveballs and subtleties of the original. If none of its hooks are getting you, though, it's easy to get irritated quickly at the lopsided love triangle and mid-series QUALITY episodes.
>>
>>286887624
Sure, the original Macross is fun and interesting.

Asking the otaku scholars/old farts ITT:

I've always associated the peak moe/Akihabara era with the mid-2000s. So I was surprised that Komugi in 2002 was already taking jabs at otaku-bait, which seems to already be well-established by that point. Other otaku cornerstones like Di Gi Charat are from '99 and later, but that whole aesthetic seems much less prevalent earlier through the 90s (might be a false impression, though).

Where and when exactly did it start and develop from, then?
>>
>>286888124
In the very very late 80s and all through the 90s it was associated with that, but not as much for anime but for VNs and PC games. A few famous VN's from the 90s are Kanon and To Heart for example.

And i'm back.
I still think Terra E is my favorite film of the time period, but yeah, Arcadia was pretty cool.
After enduring the TV show which i honestly didn't like much, the movie was quite the treat. From the planes and modern scenes to the shots in space, it was breathtaking. I very much adored the dramatic tone the film had and the score really elevated it. Likewise, i liked the script a lot, with plenty of good lines.
>When we see in hell, we'll share a cup. Until then, live your dream, harlock.
It's a strangely romantical film. A lot of it's ideas about what means being a man, hope and freedom are seen from a fairly idilic place, but can't help but find some reason to them, like they resonate even to this day. I think it meanders a bit, and there some stuff from the TV show that i'd have liked for it to touch upon, but i guess what they were going for here was hard to link to the show.
All in all, i liked it.

It's a bit more childish and more entertainment than "art Leiji" like the film or first show. But it has some great moments, and it's nice to have Tochiro and Emeraldas around more. That's pretty much Leiji to a t. His particular brand of sci fi leans very heard on the operatic side of things. I liked SSX. Nibulung was... not the best. I have a friend who sworn off Harlock for years because of it a long time ago.
You should check out Galaxy Express if you haven't.

Watched the OVA Submarine 707. It was a... somewhat decent undersea adventure. Wouldn't put it on par with other sub anime, of which there are criminally few of, but what do want out of a single 45 minute OVA. This ain't no Super Atragon.

People talk about lost media in terms of actual shows you can watch but without books and cels, certain scenes are truly lost media after removal from home copies
Arion had 4 pages deleted from the final script, and in the scripts itself there was 3 scenes made (known) that have cels and lines but not left in. 1retake scene was omitted in the final product.

What was left out of the script was Poseidon watching arion battle in an Olympic coliseum battle. He would develop a fever that Seneca would be worried about.
>>
>>286943120
That feels like a normal part of film making in general. Even with all the extended shit the LOTR movies added you always hear tale of something new that cut left on the cutting room floor.
>>
>>286943229
Oh of course. If you left everything in the movie the runtimes would horrible and did that should get cut wouldn't. I understand why the battle was cut. It would be cool animated but if the fever impacted his exertion and fever later in the movie where he draws his blade against Poseidon in a hallucination, now that's a debate. Does fighting/using his strength cause him duress?
Small things like this even if the scenes themselves have been deleted a really fun to think about in terms of impact on future actions. Similar to cut lines from Gundam.

I really wish they still did thing like this for people like me who like to collect stuff

Currently juggling three anime, all count for this thread.

>Igano Kabamaru

Anyone else seen the last two? Both have been a fun watch for me in particular.
>>
>>286944770
Not retro and the manga is better.
>>
>>286945202
The manga is on eternal hiatus with a cliffhanger, I wouldn't recommend people to read it even though I enjoyed most of it.
>>
>>286945237
Nana is not even Yazawa Ai's best work either. That tile goes to Gokinjo Monogatari, which feels closer to Paradise Kiss and Marmalade Boy than Nana. And frankly those are the sort of series that I would go to first.

Not that Nana is bad, just a matter of personal preference.
>>
My cousin passed way recently and I suddenly remembered this oneshot he read to me when I was a little kid (mid2000s), and I can’t find a single thing about it
I know it’s about some guy with a guitar, and it ends on a school rooftop
It’s really messing with my head

I wish she'd just write a novella or something that says how the story is supposed to end if she's never going to go back to the manga.
>>
>>286945589
I honestly think that will never happen either. Usually mangaka do not write novels unless it is tied to some larger project like .Hack//.
>>
>>286945713
I think it depends on the author though. Yasuhiko has done 6 series, for example
>>
>>286945713
Yeah I don't expect it either, just frustrating when you pick up a series and it just never gets finished without even a formal cancellation or anything.
>>
>>286945044

>>
>>286945837
I think it's just an on going meme now. I don't think nana will ever get a conclusion but I also don't think it's worth a read. Maybe if it was still in that time period but nana just doesn't hold up
>>
>>286946026
Same here. I have enjoyed all of Gallop's anime from Anime Sanjuushi on, though I have not seen Ojarumaru, Animal Yokochou or Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, plus I am stuck on episode 6 of RPG Densetsu Hepoi (typical of ARR dropping a series early on).
>>286946037
Do you think the mangaka has a better series? I feel like Paradise Kiss might still be her more popular title in certain parts of the world.

High School Kimengumi or 1 Pound Gospel. I am a sucker for gag comedies and Takahashi Rumiko, though, so I am a bit biased.

Anime Sanjuushi is good too, though, as are all WMT and WMT-likes, really. (Same goes for KodOcha, which I think is one of the best put together romcoms full stop). Hard to decide...
>>
>>286946401
I think nana will always be more popular as a word of mouth type and how much it being unfinished is major 'draw' even if it's a complaint.
I'm not a big fan of all of her works but I remember liking paradise kiss more.

It probably would have been better if they spent less on the voice cast and more on commissioning a studio other than Seven to do the animation.
>>
>>286949178
True. Any Studio would have been better. Maybe throwing Tatsunoko a bone would help as I know that they are almost entirely surviving off of merchandise at this point and desperately need a new IP to work on.

Even then, a remake was uncalled for and both Shape Up Ran and Gakuen Jouhoubu H.I.P. still lack an adaptation. Literally the only two comedies featured in WSJ during that time to lack one. (I have read neither, but they both were fairly long running fwiw).
>>
>>286949359
>Maybe throwing Tatsunoko a bone would help as I know that they are almost entirely surviving off of merchandise at this point and desperately need a new IP to work on.

The Cyborg 009 1980 movie has some evidence of scenes that made it to the recording script and boards but were deleted for time, if they ever were animated.

A popular one for fujos is 004 asking 002 if he'd like to come live in Canada with him, paralleling 009 later telling 003 he's got a race in Monaco they can meet at.
>>
>>286949359
Tatsunoko seems to like farming IPs out to Mad Cave for mixed-effort American comics these days, but with strange lenience for some vs. strictness on others.

>So concerned about "keep it in the first series" for Gatchaman but the OCs and developments don't really fit, people whinging about black Science Ninja trainees aside
>Speed Racer is a whole modernized remake

Yeah Eguchi has always been telling people that Hibari's a cross-dressing gay boy and won't fully go all the way or be trans, making one narcissistic Hibari kin type really peeved. The last chapter of the manga has a "reverse of Hibari" character which could get some thinking Hibari's trans, but it's more like the other character does go all the way and is taking testosterone to be a man.

Yeah, the Gatchaman title doesn't feel new viewer-friendly but it's also rather hackneyed. Yes. It's got wonderful artwork and a good mix of everything in regards to the plot.
The action is very fun. Everyone has creative abilities, and 10 volumes in I've yet to see a typical shonen asspull or even annoying plot armor.
The supernatural stuff is very unique and well handled.
The comedy and romance are typical Yuzo Takada so you'll probably love or hate them.
Pai is cute and you'll want to bend Parvati over.

The funny thing is some Anilist people only seem to like it for "fat kink" with L, but her design was actually slimmed down by the animation team because they realized in replicating her thick thighs and round face she looked too big. They put her on what they called a "design diet" and claimed viewers would find the revised L sexier, but she looks so strange and pointy.

Speaking of which, the subs quality for episode three is fucking awful. I'd say they got a good 20% of extremely basic lines completely wrong. First two episodes were acceptable so I'm not sure how the quality plummeted so fast between episodes.

Yeah few more episodes in and the accuracy is only going down. Stuff like "go stand in the hallway" getting translated as "what a stupid story" and "I messed up" as "I get to watch you". I'm like a N4 at best and can scrape by without subs thankfully, but I'm absolutely baffled how they got some of these lines wrong but other more complex lines and kanji translations are just fine.

Aside from that, M and L are cute enough I guess but it's just not hooking me.
>>
>>286984178
Yeah, the original OP, ED, and first few episodes were done when they had her "NG, looks fat" model and they claim they made the revised skinny model around then, but it depends on animation director. The later half of the series and the movie have her skinnier and sharper-faced more consistently iirc.

Yeah I remember there were some crabstick quality subs for later episodes too, really killed the vibe.

>>
>>286989278
there isn't really way to do it unfortunately. I'm going to buy them myself when i get some spare cash for the 34k they want. It's just not possible to do 'rescans' or revisit the film because shows from that time were just made at the quality they aired at. It's unfortunte truly but i'll take the bds for it over dvds from the 2000s. The studio did it compared to an AI so i'd at least like to support them all these years later

It's not like it matters much to me when i can just take my glasses off and hs and sd look the same kek

Picked up Cyborg 009 '79. Only watched the older films and some non-hero Ishinomori stuff. Did he really tell Takahashi to wrap up Yggdrasil because he wasn't good enough like JP wiki says? That's brutal. Anyway, it's still cool. Pulpy with traces of an artist's vision, which reminds me of Harlock a bit. The kind of latent depression some of his characters show feels very Ishinomori to me for example.

>>286990085
It was more like Ishinomori had the idea for Takahashi to do Yggdrasil as their own take of "Battle with the Gods", but Takahashi said the story scope was beyond his abilities so they cut the plot short and did all that "Warrior's Rest" filler as he shifted gears to Neo Black Ghost.
Ishinomori was pretty busy at the time but apparently contributed some guest character roughs here and there, and he was more involved with the scrapped Mythos adaptation; Takatoku pulling out caused the abrupt end at episode 50, with a dangling plot thread that was meant to lead into a further arc. They'd basically been extended, and then cancelled. Rough.

There was an auction that ended yesterday for fire (水野英子, ファイヤー). I'm honestly so stoked that I can own a nice hardcover manga from 50+ years ago (published 69-’71)especially as it's one of the first shoujo that featured both a male mc and a rockstar and signed to boot
Eiko's drawing are so lovely. I'm really in for a treat. She's very text heavy but I don't mind at all. I don't think any of her works has been scanned or licensed have they?

rebirth you mean? Yas had no part in that, the artist just heavily references his style. Zig currently has it on hiatus while she publishes her original shounen but it's not a retro manga, it's from the last couple of years.
>>
I don't know if the anime counts as retro since it's from the 90s but I've been watching KochiKame lately. It's pretty good.
>>
>>287016095
It adapts a 1970s manga, so I would say it counts. 90s was a transition period, but most stuff after 1995 is modern (with NGE being the dawn of this era).
>>
>>287016889

>>287014386
The Ace OVAs are from the same Dezaki period as those, where he was doing extremely moody, atmosphere-rich stuff. The TV show is from the early 70s, where he had more of an overwhelming, passionate energy. Both very interesting and expressive in different ways. Ace shows some of the best from both times.
At least that's my understanding, I'd love to hear more opinions.

Popularity polls may seem like they matter but they're always made by the most vocal minority. A game will sell hundreds of thousands or millions of units and the poll will have maybe twenty thousand voters, so it it looks like certain characters are the most popular but the only thing that was counted was whose autistic enough to vote. I suspect these things would be hilariously different if you could get EVERYONE to actually vote.

>>286872953
The problem with shows like Ojarumaru, Nintama Rantarou, Hanakappa, etc is that they require too much management. Western producers usually think they are too weird for kids in their country. They need a lot of money for localization since there are hundreds of episodes. It is a major investment for something you have no idea there will be a return. Because they are such big titles in Japan, there is a possibility Japanese producers demand too much money for the license.
>>
>>287021153
And then you might get those like Funimation who think since they're weird niche Japanese titles no one will care about and they're "too raunchy for kids, too safe for adults", they get edged up and re-edited as Shin-chan did.

A lot of stuff was only ever saved to one site so when stuff gets deleted or purged the thing itself is gone. Some of it is a blame the generation thing and money too. I’ve worked with archive and tracking groups of stuff before and there has been an issue of Zoomers don’t care as much about archiving and because of modern day politics there’s more people then ever willing to let stuff be lost or die because it’s problematic. Even in fucking archive groups I’ve run into people who were against keeping certain types of content. There’s also been more restrictions on stuff and dealing with isp things due to all the banking pressure as well.
>>
>>287034813
They also only archive their shit to one place and don't back it up, so if things go south all they can do is point fingers and blame others. One Afternoon Pulp blowhard AkumatsuT/GhostQ79 did that about some Megaupload of raws they took off someone's Weibo that they got a law office DMCA about. Then you get all those archivists that gatekeep or make things a personal morality play.

you should just stop looking in english. manga updates has a decent amount of older things but unless you read manga in japanese or MTL on your own you wont really find many things. A lot of showa manga is not available in ebook format nor seen as worth it to scan. I think you should just take a gamble and purchase random books that you find interesting.
for example, 水野英子 has a lot of historical weight but there is no manga of hers available on the english side >>286997724 >>286997593 . So many popular mangaka don't have anything available without purchasing books yourself。try looking up shogakugan award winners and seeing if you read them already.

OVA is the best part, the series is okay, but the OVA is what to watch, really. Fun, but not overly cutesy.

Definitely. There are also those who like yuri with the two anime-only cop girls Komachi and Naoko, to the further anger of those sorts.

綿の国星 before it was serialized in to a few different versions of manga was a children's book.

This is the book I have.
Unfortunately there isn't too much information on the earlier books before the manga. It's hard finding some things about it that isn't the latter children's book series. But this book is nice at least and I'm thankful it had the bonus.

Gonna ask here since I mainly watch anime and read manga on said tablet (old Samsung first gen Galaxy Tab S). What would you recommend? How the S9? Is there any other tablet out there that has great display/audio?
>>
>>287083962
USB sticks hooked up to your TV. They are like $10-15 each at Dollar General and should be able to hold 50, 100, or 200 episodes depending on what stick you get (16 or 32 or 64) and series bitrate.

All modern flat screen TVs have a built in flash drive reader that processes MP4s, MKVs, MOVs and sometimes AVIs.
>>
>>287084105
>>287083962
If you do not live in the US, just try to find the PNY brand, those are usually the cheapest. They can also act as a manga reader too.
>>
>>287084105
I would really rather not. My TV is not set up for that sort of thing and I prefer to watch in bed.
>>
>>287083891
Not quite, that's the climax, but the core of the film is a character study.

>>287084383

Hey, is there some kind of list or database I can check out to see all the anime that got a 4K release?
>>
>>287093347
It may not be perfect but you can search on bluray.com by filtering for 4k and anime. You may need to set the region to Japan to get a more clear list of everything that's available, in print at least.
>>
>>287093347
Set to all countries by clicking the flag next to the search bar and reload the page. Alternatively select either Japan or your region to just find releases relevant to you.

I already have a powerful laptop and desktop. I do not need a laptop. I want a tablet.
>>
>>287098327
Well fuck me, then, I just got an iPad that I have not yet set up.

What I found was a Dghrti 2025 on Amazon for $99.00 with 128GB memory, which is expandable to 2TB with an additional TF card. Has 24GB RAM.

Frankly, you should go over to >>>/wsr/ or >>>/g/ for this sort of thing, though.
>>
>>287098676
I did. They didn't help. They just said "get a laptop" like fucking retards. Nobody on the planet seems to use tablets anymore.
>>
>>287098727
I am just getting into tablets, so I couldn't tell you anything with certainty. But I would just find something with expandable memory using a TF card, that way you can keep your stuff across different devices.

It sounds like you are using it as a video equivalent of an e-reader.
>>
>>287098858
That's exactly what I'm using it for. Both an e-reader and media viewer. That's why I'm looking for:
>headphone jack
>SD card slot
>OLED screen
That apparently does not exist in current year.
>>
>>287099088
Lenovo P11 Pro has all of those, but they are a bit pricey (over $300 for starters, but most go for $400-ish).

The K10 Gen 2 is a downmarket version with an IPS LCD and that is about $200.

>>
>>287108199
The P11 also won't play 10bit video. I suspect that's also important. There's only one tablet currently made that is has OLED/jack/SD slot and it's a chinkshit onexplayer super. You're going to have to pay 2K.
>>
>>287108199
Forgive me. I only follow tech when I need it.
>>287108238
There is always the option of requesting a shop to build something. It may cost more, though. My local computer shop builds their own computers, laptops and tablets (usually using donor shells for these), as well as do refurbishes of older tech using including their own special OS (more or less just a version of Windows XP or 7, but with antivirus ported from Windows 10 Pro or 11).

I would suggest visiting some computer shops and inquiring if they have such a service for tablets.

Perhaps you can send all your old files to a storage device and then inquire about refurbishing or rebuilding your current tablet.
>>
>>287108327
Maybe link me their website. I'll pay 1K for OLED/AMOLED, headphone jack, and SD card slot plus can play 10bit video
>>287108238
I shouldn't have to pay 2K for this.
>>
>>287108466
The store in question does not have a website. You must travel to their address or call them. I can always check for you if they still do tablets, since my last purchase was a refurbished Thinkpad from their stock nearly 3 years ago. It works fine and their virus protection upgrade works like a charm, even if it is Windows 7. I also know someone who ordered a very high end custom build and it is perfect.

I wish for the jannies not to flag this as advertising, so I will attach the information in a pastebin. Excuse me for doxxing my general area... https://pastebin.com/gjgJCmXZ

If you do decide to travel to the area, please let me know. We can go out to lunch and I can give you further information as far as places to find manga (in English and sometimes in Japanese, often for $5 or less per volume), if that is the case.
>>
>>287108954
I'll give them a call tomorrow. I have easy access to manga, both raw and scanlated, so I don't need any. I also don't need virus protection.
