Why isn’t saint seiya as popular in north america as it is in south america? It’s the second most famous anime there, right behind dbz.
The plot is way more interesting than other shonen from that time.
>>
>>286996496
because it was badly censored in usania
>>
>>286996496
Too much violence for soccer moms. Too childish for adults
>>
>>286996564
>Too childish for adults
They watch monster trucks. The ptoblem is saint seiya is too earnest and the characters too self sacrificing and heroic. Whole story resonates strongly with catholic countries, but its seen as alien and maybe "cringe" by the deeply judaized, irony poisoned, protestancuck american society. SS has its own virgin mary and a bunch of brown hero orphans, its like it was made for mexicans.
>>
>the plot is way more interesting than other shonen from that time
Please I love Saint Seiya but it's literally a worse Bleach with gayer characters
>>
>>286996523
It wasn't censored, it just didn't finish airing.
>>
Its worth noting too that south america got a weird sometimes nonsensical dub, which made the interactions seem even more mystical.
>>
>>286996496
because you guys got it over a decade before we did and by 2004 the average american kid that would be into anime is going to resonate way more with "darker" and more japanese shit like naruto, bleach, inuyasha, gundam wing and the more edgy parts of dbz like cell saga

saint seiya was too old looking and too bright to appeal to edgy kids of the post 9/11 age
>>
>>286996496
Because it's fucking bad.
Had it actually aired in the 80s it probably would've been successful, but Saint Seiya was a 90s anime that competed with 90s cartoons and other 90s anime (or latecomers like DBZ), and it just fucking sucks. You have to be Brazilian to think otherwise.
>The plot is way more interesting than other shonen from that time.
No. I watched your entire fucking show and the OVAs and the reboot series, and it sucks. The plot is not "interesting", it's mostly the same arc rehashed again and again and again, and it's not even a particularly good one to rehash.

SS is pretty edgy. The problem is that it's too edgy to be solved with the edition and mistranslations.

Kinda explains why it was also popular in Italy and France. And why the muttoids hate it.

It was pretty popular in Poland. I always thought it was neat that an anime wasn't about girls/girly things/gynocentric for once. Then I found out the artist was gay, and it was just shonen wank.

Typical. Still, pretty cool anime.

>>
>>286996496
Didn't have the early foothold like in south america, and when it was brought over to the US it was a disastrous censored version with an insane dub filled with original dialogue, in an attempt to make it light hearted.

It never went beyond the Galaxian Wars, and so Saint Seiya lost all chances of growing popular in the US back then. Now it would be seen as outdated, every other shounen that got popular in the US became the introduction to several themes Saint Seiya used before, Americans wouldn't see it as a novelty.
>>
>>286997020
>No. I watched your entire fucking show and the OVAs and the reboot series, and it sucks. The plot is not "interesting", it's mostly the same arc rehashed again and again and again, and it's not even a particularly good one to rehash.
That's such a shit take. I re-watched it as an adult, and it was genuinely good.

>>
>>286998598
For real? Shit, I'm retarded. I'm pretty sure I assumed as much because someone said so on 4chan years ago. It made sense because there are so many femboys in it.
>>
There was an entire saga of a US artist trying to sue Saint Seiya for copyright infringement since the 90's, then later tried to sue Toei for BILLIONS around 2007
That stalled the series and could be the reason why they changed so much
>>
>>286998789
Kurumada is a wota. According to a message on volume 16, Kurumada was at the verge of exhaustation but he got motivated listening to a song of idol Noriko Sakai. In 1991, Sakai was launching a short manga and she wanted to meet a professional mangaka so she met Kurumada. In one hand, Kurumada is married and has 2 daughters but in the other hand, he admitted to visit gay bars. Maybe he's bisexual
>>
>>286998953
>he admitted to visit gay bars. Maybe he's bisexual
Or just closeted like so many homosexuals were during that time, especially in conservative japan. Guess that makes perfect sense, then. SS does stand out a lot with the amount of bishounen it has.
>>
>>286999091
He loves Noriko Sakai
>>
>>286999140
I mean elton john has 2 kids, so... would be insane to say he's just bisexual
>>
>>286998789
Kurumada was literally a japanese delinquent in his youth
A lot of what he writes makes more sense after you understand this
>>
>>286999508
It kinda shows? Like how every 90s kid was trying to be a tough guy and emulate gangster movies, and you can tell SS portrays that kind of resolve realistically. It's surprising it never was more popular in the US.
>>
>>286999508
Kurumada was very poor in his childhood so it was either becoming a yakuza or becoming a construction worker like his dad. He took the third way and become a mangaka. About things that influenced his work, his baby brother died from a disease when he was a kid so that give him a fascination with fraternal bonds. Also he seems to have a complicated love-hate relationship with his father, what explain his troubles with authority figures (there's a reason why Shueisha always hate him) and Oedipical drama
>>
>>286999667
>fascination with fraternal bonds
That is such a strong running theme in the anime. Apt.
>>
>>286996496
They were not Los guardianes del uuuniverso
>>
>>286996496
Because the main themes of Saint Seiya include things like spirituality, faith and loyalty, and northamericans don't have souls.
>>
>>286996496
A big part of Saint Seiya's success is due to when it started. There weren't many shounen fighting series with continuous dramatic narrative back then (something like FotNS is pretty episodic) and Saint Seiya narrative is still way too simple compared to later shows, and the action isn't flashy enough to make up for that.

The NA release took way too long to happen, and by then it had lost its main selling point and the animation was clearly "old".

It's not just North America, it even extends to some of modern day Japan.
It's pretty easy to point out why it doesn't have the same popularity it used to.
>Even at the time it was running the art looked like it was from the previous decade
>No choreography in any of the fights (and it's hard to tell what's even going on with a lot of the attacks)
>Almost all the characters lack unique personality traits and fail to stand out from one another
>Almost no down time to let the plot and characters breathe
>Constant repetition involving a constant stream of bad guys who are all without personality or character, one group (the silver saints) is notorious for just how easily they all go down, hardly even putting up a fight beyond the first one
>Character development is in short supply
There's just not much to really grab people now. Doesn't help that it was hit with horrendous American censorship and alteration and constant insistence on altering it in a way no one likes.
>>286997020
>Had it actually aired in the 80s it probably would've been successful
It did and was.
>>
Saint Seiya is way too badly written for 2026. It aged like milk.
>>
>>287000859
>It did and was.
Maybe in Argentina, but it didn't air in America until like 2002, where it bombed and got cancelled after about 40 episodes.
>>

>>
>>286997020
>it's mostly the same arc rehashed again and again and again

That's even more evident when you read other Kurumada manga, he only knows how to tell 1 story. I wholeheartedly believe that Kurumada is autistic because he has the same obsession over certain patterns that autists always have.
>>
>>286998598
>Kurumada isn't gay because he fanboys over some random idol

That's like saying that all faggots that are lady gaga fans are secretly straight
>>
>>286996496
I could say it was because of the dogshit censored dub but pedos still loved the dogshit censored cardcaptor sakura dub so i guess burgers are just dumb
>>
>>287001809
Maybe a little. It's common for fruity gay guys to fuck their "girlfriends" once in a while
>>
>>287001775
Honestly, this is true. Evertything is predictable in the arcs of Ring ni Kakero, even the character design is very predictable. The pretty boy with long hair is the most powerful, the ugly and average ones are somewhat weak and the giants are always the weakest ones
>>
>>287002048
Shinatora is the only main cast member in a Kurumada manga that doesn't have a generic pretty boy face
>>
>>287002089
It is easily the worst manga of boxing I've read in my opinion. Everything is very predictable, the character design of the enemies, the tragic ending, etc.
>>
Toei will never stop trying. Saint Seiya becoming popular in USA is their white whale
>>
>>287002143
I see, you're a faggot. Stick to bara.
>>
imagine getting mogged by your own bootleg copy
>>
>>287002219
The fuck are you talking about? Ring ni Kakero is not even close to mangas like Hajime no Ippo, Ganbare Genki, Megalo Box. Even the ending is a rip off of Ashita no Joe.
>>
>>287002143
And yet it's the series that established the shounenshit formula that we know today. I already learned that being the pioneer not always means being good when I read the Mazinger Z manga expecting it to be just as good as the Getter Robo manga but it's nowhere close.
>>
>>287002343
Kinnikuman invented the battle shonen with villains trying to dominate the world, not Kurumada.
>>
>>287002500
I'd say that Ring Ni Kakero, Kinnikuman and Hokuto no Ken are the definitive genre definers
>>
>>287002552
No? Kinnikuman created everything in battle shonen formula:

1 - Tournament arc
2 - Power level
3 - Power of friendship

Kinnikuman is still extremely popular in Japan until today.
>>
>>287002500
Not even. Mazinger Z was way before that and even that's a stretch to say it did it first. It's a generic motive for villains since forever. Some cartoon in the 40's could have done it and even that might not be the originator. Even then, Kinnikuman villains don't even do anything villainous beyond targeting the "heroes" who don't save the world from anything. All of the conflicts are too self-contained.
>>
>>287002620
Did Kinnikuman introduce characters having forms or was it Dragon Ball?
>>
>>287002679
I have no idea about the gekiga era, but all modern battle shonen are influenced by Kinnikuman directly or not directly. Dragon Ball is very influenced by Kinnikuman. You clearly have no idea of how popular is Kinnikuman in Japan. Even My Hero Academia have characters inspired in Kinnikuman.
>>
>>287002500
>No? Kinnikuman created everything in battle shonen formula:
>1 - Tournament arc

The problem is that Kinnikuman is stuck there. "Tournament arcs" aren't a side or specific thing in Kinnikuman after it becomes battle shounen, it's how -everything- happens, like in sports shounen.

A demon breaks the victory celebration of a tournament and kills the short baldy who was very close friends with the main character while announcing world domination plans. Yeah, Dragonball directly ripped this off at the end of the 22nd Budokai, but the difference is that when Piccolo pulls that stuff in Dragonball all bets are off and now they're fighting against demons without any rules or clear structure. Meanwhile, Kinnikuman just turns it into another tournament arc where everyone fights in wrestling rings.

Battle Shounen came on its own exactly because it WASN'T tied to the tournament arc format, even if there are still tournaments here and there.
>>
>>287002919
Kinnikuman for Japan is like Captain America for the United States, it is extremely popular only in the United States, not the rest of the world. Saint Seiya is not a classic in Japan and Hokuto no Ken is not that relevant nowadays.
>>
>Ring ni kakero 1977
>Kinnikuman 1979
>>
>>287003279
The two first years of RNK are pretty average boxing not fantastic boxing
>>
>>287002792
>You clearly have no idea of how popular is Kinnikuman in Japan.
Did you even read what you were replying to? I told you that villains dominating the world is not a Kinnikuman thing.
>>
>>287002620
Kinnikuman invented tournament arcs as much as it invented wrestling.
>>
Anime didn't became a significant market in the US until the mid 90s at the very earliest when DBZ while near the end of its run was still airing. Meanwhile the Saint Seiya anime ended in 1989 and newer anime were more likely to gain traction to justify bringing them over to the US over something like Saint Seiya. By the time the Saint Seiya anime was brought over to the US in 2003 it was widely outdated.
>>

Hyoga vs Camus was pretty much an Oedipical nightmare. According to psychoanalysis, a boy become a man by separating from his mother and killing his father. Obviously symbolically but Kurumada took it literally. Camus wasn't Hyoga's biological father but he was the man who raised him so good enough

Fuck, you also seem to mix any values for young boys coming from reading and watching both of these series, with main characters and their journey, as if other characters didn't exist. You need to have resolve, faith, and be determined in reaching your goal and stay true to your beliefs. It's one lf of many lessons you can find in Saint Seiya. One of man that will allow you to man up, but not force you to believe that only under strict circumstances they will be relevant. And it's only a part about Seiya. The main crew has four more people that can reach you a lot, Anon. You might be an adult, but let me tell you this - there is nothing wrong even in learning from Shun's sensitive masculinity or Ikki's machoism.

Kurumada always had a bad relationship with Shueisha. Arguably it reached its breaking point during Fuma no Kojiro when Kurumada's editor ordered him to skip his father's funeral to keep working. Kurumada told him to fuck off and Shueisha never forgot. Then Otokozaka flopped and Shueisha ordered Kurumada to conclude the manga in the next chapter. Kurumada planned to continue Otokozaka some day so he published pic related, becoming a proto meme. After Otokozaka was cancelled, Shueisha threatened Kurumada to remove his spot in WSJ so he had to publish Saint Seiya when he still wasn't sure of what's going to be about. When Toei selected Saint Seiya for an anime adaptation, Shuiesha replied that Kurumada was too young (despite Toriyama was younger and got Dr Slump). The break up come after Silent Knight Sho. Shueisha ordered Kurumada to make another Saint Seiya so Kurumada created Silent Knight Sho but it bombed so Toei wanted to move Kurumada to a seinen magazine with less readers. Kurumada felt offended after all he did for WSJ so he quit and moved to Akita Shoten publishing B't X. Kurumada and Shueisha remained at odds during the 90s but they got an agreement in the 00s with Kurumada writing Ring ni Kakero 2. It seems the deal included Kurumada becoming the sole owner of his IPs. By comparison, Dragon Ball don't belong to Toriyama's family but Shueisha but when Kurumada dies, his daughter will inherit Saint Seiya

I knew about most of things that you mentioned, but some of them were new (for instance, the Fuma no Kojiro thing; no wonder that the last arc of this manga has always felt awkward). Thanks for a good explanation, Anon.
I think that Kurumada did the right thing in becoming the only owner of his works. He remained faithful to his vision and values, instead of becoming tied to corporations.

Kinnikuman mentioned, I remember hearing from someone the Chile dub studio drop the series after getting into the Akuma Chojins arc because the series was getting more serious and centered into fights instead of comedy and the studio did not liked that, I think if the series had been picked up by a Mexican dub studio instead it probably would have had more recognition in Latin America, like others anime. Another thing I heard is that the anime was only broadcast in Chile

Only the first part is true, America was going through another Think of the children/Modern media is too violent moment. Plus SS is characterized by its copious amounts of blood; it's a core element of the series, and they didn't have the tools we have now. Censoring all that blood was an impossible task.

PBZ couldn't have said it better; the explicit bloody violence was the main selling point of SS.

Came too late to the USA and has way too much meddling. Some think Toei bends over backwards out of the goodness of their heart for ungrateful burgers, but it's a mix of bad timing and shitty decisions.
>Fans for it existed since the 80s and Pat Munson-Siter made a "viewer's guide" full of errors but was the standard for burger fans at the time
>Fans wanted Viz to license it in the early 90s but nah
>Japanese produced English test dub done in 1989 never sold
>DiC got its claws in it in 2003 and made it a big laughingstock with Bowling for Soup, green blood, etc.
>ADV only sub-licensed it for the uncut version, could only license as far as DiC had (and DiC hadn't even dubbed that far anyway)
>Discotek only licensed the movies and said TV show would only happen if movies sold well
>They didn't, and Saint Seiya autists are a constant source of contempt for their brass
>Sentai dub only happened because Toei funded it to go alongside CGISlop show
>CGISlop show handled by those like Eugene Son who changed Shun to a girl out of arrogance

I would never recommend Saint Seiya to anyone, they'll like the characters, they'll want more content about them, and they'll get absolutely nothing new because the creator never really cared about it. The censorship itself wasn't the problem. Pretty much every anime Cartoon Network US aired was censored. The problem with the Knights of the Zodiac dub was that DiC completely massacred the story, music and characterization in their approach unnecessarily. It's more comparable to 4Kids' One Piece dub.
Line and story changes in Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragon Ball's English dubs at least done with the belief, rightly or wrongly, that they were working towards a good end product. Knights of the Zodiac changes were done in diluting the any substance the program had because all involved didn't care.
It compounds even further with Saint Seiya anyway because pre-Asgard it's just looked old and poorly animated for 2003. Gundam 0079 aired just a couple of years earlier and failed to draw ratings leading to cancellation (with 9/11 as a scapegoat).

The fandom of this anime in both Asia and Latin America is extremely shit. In Latin America is a bunch of boomers with belly beer who still make jokes about characters like Aphrodite and Shun, (But all of them respect feminine characters like Shaka and Mu for some reason), only talk about power level and post very shit AI contenct. In Asia is a bunch of old and asexual fujoshis with very few imagination and only know to draw generic faces and poses.

Yeah if anything he seems busy with the shitty Witcher show. Was just another Tuesday for him.
>>
Toei's attempts at bringing back Saint Seiya came at the wrong time. Omega, Soul of Gold or even Santia Sho would've been much better by the current Toei that actually takes shit seriously.
>>
>>287056287
The only person in the entire set with a vague knowledge about Saint Seiya was Diego Tinoco (Nero)
>>
>>287056443
Saint Seiya just needed a 2D remake made in Japan loyal to the manga. They could make some changes for the pacing but nothing too drastic like LoS turning Seiya into a Naruto wannabe. The potential is there but Toei just doesn't trust SS and the execs are stuck in pre-2000s
>>
>>287056494
Problem with that is they might make it cel shaded 3D slop or something else of those trends these days.
>>
>>287056494
>>287056634
Because they mad all those shows and the 3D remake at a bad time. But look at the stuff they've done since: saved One Piece production, made the best looking DB movie in Broly, Daima was dumb but the production values were great, both Ghost Game and Beatbreak are the best animated Digimon shows by far, they did the great Adventure of Dai remake, they made the 2nd and 3rd seasons of World Trigger actually good after the disastrous ugly 1st season and are actually going back to properly re-adapt the manga. Current Toei is a different beast from that period of time where they were just shitting out mid slop and ugly OP/DB/etc. episodes.
>>
>>287056776
Toei lost 60$ millions in the live action. I doubt they want to touch SS again
>>
>>287056813
Yeah, that's why I said their attempts came at a wrong time. It's a shame because if we didn't get that many misguided flops they would probably bring it back more interestingly or at least with a proper remake. But this wasn't unique to Saint Seiya, DB Super's first 3 arcs were shat on for how ugly they looked, and Sailor Moon Crystal was also a mess.
>>
>>287056838
At least Super was popular, even if many fans see it negatively these days. Toriyama got a free pass for a myriad of reasons but his decisions in his last years were debatable at best.

>>
>>287056494
The main problem is that you never know how long the Heaven Arc will take. Next Dimension took 18 years. To make a whole adaptation only to be left in limbo for 10 years again makes no sense.
Once the Heaven Arc is entering its final stages they should do what they are doing with Captain Tsubasa. A few episodes cours, no filler, straight to the point.
>>
>>287056813
Are they retarded? I thought all losses went to Hollywood. It was obvious it was going to be a flop, why the fuck would they invest on it?
>>

>>
>>287059001

>>286996810
The last attempts at dubbing the whole show while actually finishing this time, added quips and modern talk as well, and needless swearing on the Crunchyroll version. Don't know if they dubbed Hades.

The IP is cursed, but NOT by itself.
>>
>>287060846
The dub is also inconsistent as fuck about whether to use "Armor" or "Cloth", or "Saints" vs. "Knights". After ep.42, they had to exclusively use "Armor" and "Knights" to fit the CGIslop show, but even before that you'd get episodes where they'd say one term in one line, and the other in another in the same damn scene.
Toei also mandated they use weird misnomers like "Whale Morris" like the CGI show, instead of "Moses". There were also some audio glitches and misplaced lines.
>>
>>287058257
Those who enjoyed the Araki/Himeno designs or Koyama's writing would not be keen on that. Plus, you get the wrong director or writers with skewed priorities and you get something like the first two Sailor Moon Crystal seasons where they can't decide if they want to faithfully adapt manga chapters or change shit up, and it creates plot holes along with the bad animation.
>>
>>287003719
Dragonball had god awful stupid comedy, early Dragonball was just More Dr.Slumo but as an action comedy, and even so Toriyama just couldn't let it go.

The earliest episodes also have a translation error where they claim there are 12 Bronze Cloths for the 12 signs of the zodiac. That's...more like the Golds.
And no, Hades hasn't been dubbed since the OVAs are a separate license from the TV show. Maybe if someone does a CGI version of Hades (never), Toei will want to foot the bill for a dub of the OVAs. The Sentai Filmworks dub was only commissioned as a cross-promotional thing for the CGI show, otherwise Trollei wouldn't have bothered. It was a rush job dub too, but Netflix just lagged in releasing the episodes.
>>
>>287061029
Right, the Fred Wolf Films cartoon seems to still be an enigma in some ways. If Raymona hadn't gotten a copy of it under the mistake it was related to the Toonmakers Sailor Moon, it'd still be pretty unknown.

Then you got StarStorm, which was only a 7 minute proof of concept trailer. You'll notice that even though Renaissance-Atlantic registered trademarks for terms like "Pegasus" and "Andromeda" for it, they changed the Cloth names by production maybe as a way to try to distance it from Seiya amid tension with Bandai and Toei.
>>
>>287061038
The Samurai Troopers production history is a real trip and a half itself. It was a fusion of two rejected anime pitches involving armor, one which had young men fight it out in a tournament called "Battle Cry".

The result still involved a tournament and it took place on a fictional planet, but sponsors and those higher up in the chain at Sunrise nuked the "outer space" and tournament arc beginning ideas to get something a little more specific to Japan.

The interesting thing about SS, more than the plot, is the worldbuilding.
Of course, the idea of greek gods reincarnating and being assisted by random underlings with powers based on the constellations, which affects both their techniques and their different kinds of armors (clothes, marinas, surplices, etc.).
Then there's also the fact that the bronze saints are orphans. They are society's trash. There's absolutely nothing beneath them, they are the bottom. Yet they are ultimately the ones that are enlightened and fight to protect Athena against the elites. They fight the silvers first, and then they fight (first against and afterwards together with) the gold saints. They fight against corruption in the system, and then they fight the gods, the system itself. The boys who were nothing ultimately, through struggle, effort, sacrifice and conviction become the elite, on par with gods. The orphans no one gave a shit about ultimately become the saviors. That's something that Lost Canvas didn't get, btw, it was pure gold saints wank with a Pegasus saint thrown in because the author couldn't avoid it, if it's Saint Seiya there HAS to be a Pegasus.
And against them in the first arc you have a hierarchical institution like the jedi or the Vatican that was corrupted because the head of it was evil. Each of the gold saints become interesting not because they have some gay anecdote about wanting to belong when they were kids, but because of how they react against the corruption. Some (Deathmask, Aphrodite) know it and take part on it, some (Milo, Aioria) are too stupid to notice what's going on, some (Shaka, Camus) for different reasons don't care, some (Aldebaran) smell that something's off but they don't know what exactly. What defines them as characters isn't their shitty past, but what they do about the Sanctuary's corruption.
>>
>>286996496
2/2
That whole concept of a few guys from the bottom tier being persecuted by the organization because they fight against the corrupt system is something that happens a lot in many later manga, from Bleach to Jujutsu Kaisen. And usually a few of the upper classes that know what's going on and/or aren't corrupt help them, but not enough to get completely involved, the fight is left to the main characters mostly.

The plot, on the other hand, is quite repetitive. That's the issue a lot of people have with it. And the filler didn't help at all.
The problem with SS is that it should've finished back in the early 90s. No ND, which was ridiculous. Just Tenkai right after Hades. Had he done that, the repetition wouldn't have hurt so much, at least respecting the manga. OK, it would be the 4th time they did it, but at least it would've served the history. First Athena had to claim her place, then she had to face the other gods. Poseidon, Hades, Zeus, that's it, end of the story. A little bit repetitive, but cohesive.
The problem is that they did a lot of unnecessary spinoffs, starting with the Asgard saga. Which could've been fine if they developed another ideas for the plot. But it's always the same. Not only Asgard, but also most of the OVAs, Lost Canvas, Omega, Soul of Gold, Next Dimension. At one point or another they default to some kind of 12 temples fight, even when it begins differently. So it's inevitable that it will feel like it dragged out A LOT (like this post kek).

tldr Saint Seiya was a great idea with awesome worldbuilding, but it dragged so long and the same formula was used so many fucking times that of course everyone will say that the plot is repetitive and, after seeing it so many times, boring.
