So from what I've read online Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex was animated with a 16:9 aspect ratio (actually 1.85:1 which is slightly wider but whatever) in mind even though most people had 4:3 TVs back then. Are there other shows from that era like that or was it pretty uncommon? I like to download dvd rips of old shows to watch on my crt because it saves on space, but I don't want to watch stuff designed for 16:9 on my square box.
>>287070931At one time there was a push for "HD" video, which usually implied 4:3. It was preferred. For example Hidamari Sketch famously had a DVD (or maybe BD) release which has an aspect ratio wider than TV.

I remember watching Heat Guy J on MTV in the early 00s, and I had a widescreen TV, but the aspect ratio was pretty strange. What I think might have been happening is that the channel wasn't broadcasting it in widescreen (even though the show was made in widescreen) and some setting on my TV was stretching it to look weird.
