Azumanga Daioh gave way to one of my favorite tropes. The bubbly cheery girl and the stoic, silent girl make a deep emotional connection right at the end of the series. Haibane Renmei, Sora no Woto, hell even Madoka Magica benefited from this perfect little story structure. The two most unlikely characters become great friends right as their time together is about to end.

Chiyo-chan would have some jokes with Sakaki, make her blush and get embarrassed, but the two of them really came together as good friends when the fucking cat swam from Iriomote Island to mainland Japan and found her way back to Sakaki. Since Maya couldn't stay at Sakakis' house she had to stay at Chiyos' and out of this the two got to know one another and became close friends.

Well, yeah. They were two ironic peas in a pod, one the advanced genius, the other the air-headed autist both providing each other with the insight the other would miss, and both relating to one another with childlike charm.

But Sakaki was always kind of accessory to the group. She didn't really have a solid relationship with anyone except for Kagura who only wanted a rivalry, and Tomo filled that role to some extent as well. Then you had Kaorin who just crushed on her so hard she had a sexual dilemma about it. But I think it's just beautiful and fitting that the girl that Sakaki really opens up to, spends her time with, and gets to know is Chiyo who doesn't see her as a superior athlete, or singles her out for her buxom figure, she just appreciates her as a friend and they really click right there at the end of the series.
