I can understand why people like Evangelion, but I think you need to be fucking depressed to "get" this show. Or at least watch it for the first time at a moment in your life where you're not feeling great. Because when I watched it, I wasn't really going through any shit in my life and I just thought it was okay. Not great not horrible, just okay
>>287085498The first six episodes are great. Anno should have just ended the story with Rei smiling
>>287085560Yeah I agree. Sometimes a shorter simpler story can carry more meaning
>>287085498maybefirst time I watched it was as a 13 year old and I didn't really get it. just got the cool robots lol boobs experiencesecond time was as a 19 year old that didn't even realize how deeply depressed I was coming out of highschool and was soon moving away to go to college. and it was a harrowing emotional journey with indescribably intense catharsis at the end seeing EoE a second time
>>28708562319 is a sensitive period in general, that's when I watched it too and it wrecked me
>>287085498idk it hit me hard the first time because of that, but later watches i've really come to appreciate the filmmaking and other elements of how deft the character writing and pacing are a lot more. i think there's a lot to get from it and enough to call it a masterpiece even if you aren't at the same place in your life as the characters.
>>287085498>I think you need to be fucking depressed 14-year-old to "get" this showFTFYIt's pointless to watch this slop as a 30-something. But it can be pretty hard-hitting during your formative years. But I still maintain that Gurren Lagann and FLCL are better. Eva tends to attract a lot more troons and pseuds
>>287085498Anno was going trough a serious depression during the production of EVA so you're probably right. Luckily not every piece of media needs to be for everyone. If you're a normalfag who has never suffered in life (not accusing you) you're likely to come away from watching it thinking ''shinji is such a bitch, i would've gotten into the robot and fucked all the girls!''
>>287085498being immersed and self-insert into a show is a different thing than "getting" and "understanding" itI was never depressed, neither as a kid when I first watched it nor now, but I understand it and thought it was an amazing show.
Anno used to go to a train cross and contemplate tossing himself onto the path of an oncoming trainand one time he actually tried itThat's why he uses trains in eva as liminal spaces between life and death, subconscious and conscious, self and others. and why Rebuild ends with the hell train finally pulling up to the station, rid or the morbid red gloom that was in all the previous hell train scenes, and letting Shinji and the other pilots disembark as though freed from a curse
>>287086319there's a difference between taking for granted that a protag is just like you and will make the same decisions you would, and seeing the kind of person you are reflected in the protag in a deeply cutting way that makes you feel "Oh god I really am just like that and need to do better"frankly the term 'self-insert' has devolved into a thought-terminating cliche when 90% of the time what people actually mean is 'audience surrogate'
>>287086380What? "Audience surrogate" is a completely different thing than self-inserting, and no, when I called him a self-insert I wasn't referring to whatever you think of. Guys like OP can not immerse themselves into a story unless they project themselves onto a character(usually the protagonist). And you don't need empathy either to "understand" a story. You may feel more emotional with high empathy, but not something you need to get what a show is about. It's like the only thing OP likes now about NGE is that it makes him feel something in his hollow heart, completely ignoring the story telling, characters, art, directing, music, sounds etc.
>>287086486>Guys like OP can not immerse themselves into a story unless they project themselves onto a character(usually the protagonist)I'm OP and I don't really get how you can draw that conclusion from my post. I wasn't even saying anything about the protagonist I was just more broadly referring to the show itself. It's a very gloomy show
>>287086560Everything you say confirms what I talked about.>I didn't like this show until I was as depressed as the characters in the showhow is that not "can only immerse themselves into a story unless they project themselves onto a character"?
>>287086486OP was clearly referring to the kind of emotional resonance that makes you feel a work of art is a masterpiece as the thing they didn't get which others describeSelfinserters never feel that, they only feel vindicated or insulted
>>287086602I didn't say that, I'm lucky enough to have never been depressed. What I mean is that I do really think the people who watched this for the first time must've been going through some shit, or were depressed, and that's why it resonated with them. I can appreciate aspects of the show, I think it's competently made, I think it's really good looking. But it doesn't resonate with me, and so I don't "get" it. I understand why people do though, and I'm trying to explain myself and why other people might not "get" it. It's difficult to articulate, honestly
>>287085498i could never make it past the first few episodes
>>287085498>I think you need to be fucking depressed to "get" this show.No you don't, stop saying dumb shit.
>>287087335Dumb shit
>>287085498you need to not be unintelligent to "get" this show. the empathy of some people is crazy, exactly, you cant "get" clannad because your wife isnt fucking dead
>>287087509>2deep5me
>>287087509I have empathy anon. What're you talking about?
>>287087509Once you get properly into the story, you can empathize just fine.
>>287085498You could go the alternative route and watch some mecha shows. A lot of Eva is meta stuff about mecha shows.>>287086327Is this actually true? Because a lot of Eva comes from Oniisama e, which also has train symbolism throughout.
Ngl i actually like how the characters are depressed i mean it's a post apocalypse world, they aren't going to be happy.
>>287087569shinji is sad because his father doesnt talk to him, asuka wants attention because she has low self-esteem, misato tries to fix her life with sex and work...then in eoe rei gives shinji the chance to live in a "fantasy world with no pain" or real life, and shinji chooses the pain because he values his life. even with all the shit because escaping from pain is not the same as not wanting to live.this is very basic, you dont need to be depressed to get this. if you have a little bit of empathy you can "get" it.
>>287087717it's in the NHK documentary “Professional”, though be warned the official translation is a bit censored
>>287087837Neat, thanks anon.
I'm remaking the EDif anyone wants a gif of a noisy spinning upside down rei, please take care of her as I will start deleting project files
>>287085498I've been clinically depressed for about a decade now, and I thought it was dogshit and boring when I watched it.
>>287087972>>287088766Thank, I'll save these.
>>287085498It's a cool scifi show with kino aesthetics and mythos. The depression thing is just a bonus.
>>287088800same
>>287085498You need to be in your teens, have depression and ideally live in the 90s when it was coming out.
