The series' heavy focus on disabilities such as Qifrey's monocular vision, Tartar's colorblindness and Beldaruit's and Custas' leg paralysis and how magic could, should and won't interact with them is one of its best aspects actually. It makes the conflict between factions much more immediately tangible.
