Is there a name for this sub-genre of things that people only post the same 2 gifs of and never discuss the story or characters because those elements were incredibly fucking lackluster yet the films/shows consistently sneak their way into people's top 50 just because they look nice/have a really confident aesthetic? Pat Labor 2 is also absolutely this. There must be a name for this
>>
It's called /a/core

Aesthetics are enough.
>>
What same two gifs

All Oshii movies are extremely one watch oriented. I like cyberpunk so I rewatch gits though.

When it comes to animation, specially film-length animation, plot can be nice (personally im a fan of characters more) and if it has a good and engaging one it IS a plus, but it is far from the most important aspect of the piece. Good fluid animation, ambitious visuals, harmonious music are all something i value more when i go watch an animated feature film.

t.Fantasia is my favorite animated movie

damn i didnt realize all the things i know this for are from Oshii, that sucks lol his sense of aesthetics are really good but the guy cannot write compelling characters/drama outside of ghost in the shell, and even gits is a bit dry in that department at times.
>>
>>287103774
that sounds like mainstream anime gifs

yeah patlabor and jin roh are eye wateringly beautiful in terms of their animation, but where i differ from you is that I believe IF a film is going out of its way to have dialogue and character drama and all of these things, i want it to keep up with the visuals. for example a guy like yasua feels like he has a consistently better balance between ambitious visuals and character/dialogue/story than oshii, despite yasuas visuals being sketchier/less refined of course

There are simple stories that don't leave the place for the discussion but it doesn't make them worse. Learn to appreciate the art of simplicity

Mind you explain?

This movie is pretty based though.

Then we will just have to disagree since between a film with outstanding aesthetics with a lacking story aspect and a movie that is just good on both subjects i will most of the time prefer the former over the latter.

If we were talking about something lengthier like a tv series then i would be more aligned with your preference, as while i do think of myself as a more of a visuals kind of guy, no matter how nice it is to look at i will eventually need some more mental stimulus during 24+ episodes of content.

Idk, man, i think oshii can have good dialogue and drama. Patlabor 2 has a superb script. Granted, Tv and the ovas did the heavy lifting in terms of characterization, and you need to like both Gotoh and Shinobu, but still, i think it serves as a good capping stone of the SUV2.

the intro was fantastic and got you immediately invested. plot and characters were also good when you think about them after finishing the anime, or when rewatching it

Vibe is enough. No need to discuss about why you enjoyed an anime with a specific vibe.

>DURR DOES THIS SPECIFIC THING HAVE A NAME?
why are zoomers like this

People come with expectations of action flick and instead they get slow romance.

>>287107976
I wouldn't call it romance, more like a parable about duty. Wolves can't live as humans, even if they want to
>>
>>287108278
The wolf stuff is very heavy handed but I did find it's themes about incompatibility interesting. I feel like most creators would have had the story include the protagonist learning to live as a human. Acknowledging that it was impossible for him to be any different is surprisingly harsh
>>
>>287109345
He did learn to live as a human. That was his cover. The ending is him either choosing or being forced to leave it behind him.
>>
>>287103774
Yeah it's called anime for sophisticated grow ups. There's no need to discuss plot or characters because understanding is implicit.
>>
>>287105078
yeah OP is a brainlet
Jin Roh does have a good story but it doesn't quite fit the first impression some might get based on the aesthetics, simple as. They watch it expecting a shooty shooty bang bang right wing death squad kind of film meanwhile it's a rather slow drama with tragic love story.

>>287104457
shounen is very brown, paco
>>
>>287103774
because some movies are about experience, not plot
you can call it experience-core or atmospheric-core

Heisei-era OVAs.
