that OP was not I was expecting given the subject matter of the show. Maybe it would've been too on the nose or too much of the same thing if they had gone for a more thematically approriate song.

IMO the anime did a good job with enough clues to let the viewer guess the inevitable twist, but that doesn't mean it had to be a 'dark' show so I like the lighthearted OP and the colorful palette they have picked for the show.

I can see people criticize YLiA because it has too many melodrama tropes and some very telegraphed sequences, but everything is just executed so well that you'd have to be a contrarian to actually think it's bad.

Yea, I heard the story of Oda reading 1 chapter, buying the entire series, then forcing his entire staff to go buy the series themselves to help develop and teach them as well as support the author.

I can understand why, telling a dual story this impact in 44 chapters has to be one of the rarest feats in the entire manga medium

I agree that most people saying it's "bad" are being contrarian, but I think it's valid to call it mediocre. It stands out as a shounen anime/manga, but compared to many mature dramas or even shojo it isn't really anything that special. It also was 44 chapters monthly which is similar to 80-120 chapters for a weekly series, so it's not like it didn't have a lot of time to tell its story, it ran for like 5 years. There are plenty of one-shots and 1-2 volume manga out there that hit the same emotional notes but completely strip out the melodrama, so I think it's understandable to criticize it for that. But if you are exposed to more media (especially outside of anime/manga in general) it doesn't hit as hard.
I think it's decent myself, and I recommend it to normalfags all the time because it's a good story to get people into anime or manga, but I wouldn't even put it in my top 50 manga.
