Design-wise, having only animal ears only works if they replace the human ears, so are lower on the head. You can't just slap them on top of the head, otherwise you end up with situations like Uma Musume where they always need hair covering that part of the head that would feel unnaturally blank if you could look at it and there weren't an ear there.Kemono Friends had an in-universe lore explanation for the 4 ears issue, although this isn't really necessary. You can just have people with 4 actual ears if you're doing fantasy animal people.

I did see a case for making the ears significantly larger so they occupy the space of both, but I don’t know if that actually results in a nice looking character because I haven’t see many examples.
