The manga is that different? I was already surprised to hear how much more of a bitch Youko was but now I need to make reading a priority.

I read the manga 8 years ago and I’m currently finishing the the anime. The adaptation has ton of filler, even a lot of what it doesnt look like filler IS filler. But it’s a pretty good one, a lot of episodes serve to develop better the characters, or make the story more coherent. And Joe is quite different too. Somehow he feels more mature and his growth is more clearly defined, in the manga, his growth is there, but I don’t think it’s as evident. Even in the second half, he stumbles or acts just as wild as he did at the beginning , but well, depending on who you ask, they might tell you that he’s more realistic that way

Yeah both the manga and anime are greats. I'll disagree on her being especially bad in the manga though.

Joe was always very hard to pin down in the anime. I could never quite tell what he was thinking, to a point he felt completely distinct from any other fictional character I've seen. I was hoping the manga would be more explicit with his internal monologue but oh well.

You might want to check Dezaki's talk with Chiba

I might be misremembering, and I don't have the manga as present as I’d like, but that's kind of why I said that his manga version might look more realistic to some people. I feel like till the end he was more of a slave to his impulses and didn't have the same mysticism or introspection that they try to show you in the anime. It felt like he never lost, nor would ever lose his heart of a troublemaker.

Incredible how back then the adaptations were not only faithful but also added more content that enhanced the manga. Now you have the complete opposite where they delete scenes and completely fuck up what little they do adapt with shitty rewrites or bad animation

Danpei did get shafted here, being painted as the one at fault instead of Joe and very shamelessly at that.
>>
why did nishii's seiyuu change for AnJ2? did the first seiyuu die or something?
i stuck out to me too much. AnJ1 nishii sounds a bit dim-witted but appropriate. with AnJ2's nishii i can't even imagine that soft-voiced nigga having gone to juvie
>>

All the VAs changed except for Joe, Danpei and I think Sachi. Carlos, Yoko, Noriko, the other kids, all have different VAs. The second season was done by different producers, studio and 9 years later so maybe they couldn't get all the old cast or they wanted their own.

that's nuts. i didn't notice yoko, noriko, or kinoko being different but maybe that's just because i wasn't focusing on them

Turn out Dezaki is just Nakayama Ryu of his own era
>>
>>287177711
Oh shit I didn't even know these were subbed.

That actually explains a lot. Dezaki always felt like he was deliberately sanding off the rough edges and turning Joe into this almost mythic figure instead of just some violent brat with talent. The way the anime lingers on his silence and those postcard memories makes way more sense if that was a conscious reinterpretation rather than just padding.

Chiba’s take on Joe is so raw compared to the anime’s framing too. You can tell the tension between them is part of why the adaptation works at all. It’s not just “faithful vs unfaithful,” it’s two guys with different ideas about who Joe is.

Kind of wild we got something that layered out of a production that messy. Makes me appreciate AnJ2 even more desu.

video comparison literally shows how many little details were omitted and simplified for the sake of making it easier to animate

holy fuck why does aoyama sound like that
how many bitches did he fuck while he was offscreen

I thought I saw this image in season 1, so it fucked me up when it appeared in season 2. It's driving me nuts.

Did the new scans finally finish the manga? How long will Kodansha stretch this out?

>the manga scans aren't actually finished
what the fuck why

Was Yoko actually in love with Joe or was she just desperate to keep him alive
>>
>>287185298
Both. I think saying she didn't love him is overthinking things. Yoko was clearly obsessed with him, and Joe has the kind of bad boy personality that a lot of women find attractive. Add to that, until she met Joe, Yoko was someone who had always managed to win everyone over (including Rikishi), and the few who didnt idolized her, like the boxing council, looked down on her, so meeting someone who saw her as an equal must have been refreshing. It’s something I’ve never doubted, so I’d like to hear what might make you think she wasnt really into him.

Reminder the Joe 2 film released when the show still had 9 eps to go. So the "Joe... Forever" ending is the first version in anime

Talent aside, the philosophy of the people working then feels completely different.
